Meet the Artistic Director and the driving force behind WBP, Sophie O'Donnell.

Sophie founded The Western Ballet Project in 2019 to create more opportunities for youth dancers in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. At the time Melbourne City Youth Ballet had just shut down and the only youth ballet company was the Victorian State Youth held out of Bundoora.

Sophie grew up in north west England and as a young dancer was inspired by the Northern Ballet who are well known for creating original, unique ballets. This combined with her professional dance career travelling the world on cruise ships has left her with a deep interest in different cultures, stories and traditional national dancing.

Her passions and interests are clearly evident in her ballet choices, staying clear of traditional favourites and instead choosing inspiring women, foreign folklore or themes with a strong moral.

🥁Drumroll for our guest adjudicator! Let's welcome back Miss Brigee, who will be part of our panel for 'THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA' auditions on the 11th October.

Brigee is a freelance ballet teacher with over 20 years of experience and is a Royal Academy of Dance mentor, supporting trainee teachers through the academy’s training program. She has taught extensively throughout London, Melbourne, and regional Victoria. During her time living, studying, and dancing in London, she also trained as a pointe shoe fitter for Sansha London, enriching her understanding in dancer biomechanics and pointe readiness.
Brigee has contributed to many student success, preparing dancers for examination, competitions and successful auditions into full-time training programs and summer schools in Australia and overseas. Her commitment to student-centred training led to her selection for the Royal Ballet School London Affiliate Teacher Training Program, offered to a select group of teachers whose practice aligns with the Royal ballet school’s holistic and inclusive approach. The Royal Ballet School is widely regarded as a global leader in classical ballet education and professional development.
Driven by a genuine passion for the evolving industry, Brigee is dedicated to helping each dancer develop confidence, artistry, and technical clarity. She takes pride in her ability to understand and support individual learners’ needs and in guiding both dancers and teachers toward realising their full potential.

January ballet REVEAL!
Our next youth ballet production is incredibly special to as as we will be recreating our premier ballet that we first produced in 2020, The Princess and the Pea. This marked the beginning of WBP and the start of something special that has flourished and evolved over the last 7 years.

The Princess and the Pea is our only 'fairytale' ballet but carries with it a strong message that you should never judge a book by its cover. We dont like to rely on fairys or magic wishes to make our dreams come true. We work hard and be the best person we can!

Auditions will be aged for ballet loving students aged between 8 and 19years on the 11th October SAVE THE DATE!

What's next?
Medvec and Morozko was a huge milestone for the WBP family. It marked our 10th original ballet since we started in 2019 and we are so proud of what we have created, the dancers we have worked with and the amazing teachers and choreographers we have met along the way.
Our January youth season will be performing one of our previous ballets... I wonder which it will be!? Details coming soon!
