A darker truth underlies the sharp wit and biting humour of this play. It originally debuted when homosexuality was illegal in most parts of the United States, and its 1970 film adaptation was subsequently banned in Australia, cementing its status as one of the most controversial and politically charged theatrical works of its time.

This revival comes 50 years since its premiere in Australia which led to the arrest of two cast members for using “offensive language” on stage. A targeted, and discriminatory response to the play.

The struggles these characters face—the battle between self-acceptance and societal expectation—continue to echo in contemporary audiences.

Director Alister Smith says "At its core, this play is about relationships. Bonds that hold us together and the insecurities that threaten to tear us apart. It is about the masks we wear and the moments when those facades slip, revealing our deepest fears and desires. The characters in Crowley’s world are complex, flawed, and deeply human. They weaponise humour to shield themselves from pain, turning sharp wit into both an act of defiance and a form of self-preservation."

As the character Michael so painfully concludes, "If we could all learn to just not hate ourselves quite so very much."
