This weekend at Meat Market → Orchestra Victoria and The Newmarket Collective present Across Silence

Across Silence is a collaboration the first of its kind in Australia. Delivered in Auslan, Walter Kadiki and Marnie Kerridge perform poems set to music and haptics.

Walter Kadiki is a master of weaving signed poetry and visual vernacular into poetic performance. He is known for his profound and engaging signed poetry and storytelling that bridges cultures and is accessible to deaf and hearing audiences.

In Across Silence, Walter’s powerful poem Little Fledgling is set to music composed by Andrea Keller, with the vibrational connection created via a vibro-tactile haptic vest worn by Walter in the performances as a key focus of the composition. This concert will also feature the world premiere of Little Fledgling #2, composed collaboratively by Walter and Andrea using the haptic vest throughout the compositional process. Songs from Andrea's Still Night album round out the program, signed by Marnie Kerridge and sung by Gian Slater.

This new collaboration between Orchestra Victoria and Newmarket Collective sees Andrea's compositions orchestrated by Mark Buys for chamber orchestra featuring musicians from both organisations featuring Andrea herself on piano, and singer Gian Slater performing alongside Walter and Marnie.

The APDG Awards ceremony is held annually and gathers together professionals from the Australian live performance, film, television and interactive multimedia industries, to celebrate the art of visually captivating audiences the world over. The awards recognise outstanding achievements and excellence in design for works that have been broadcast, screened or performed annually and celebrate the wonderful work of the Australian production design community.

About the organisers:
The Australian Production Design Guild (APDG) was established in 2009 as a not-for-profit organisation that represents established and emerging designers and their associates in screen, live performance, events, games and digital production across Australia. Artist Opportunity: First Nations theatre and dance makers 💫

Calling Victorian based First Nations artists, collectives & arts organisations working in experimental theatre and dance.

CRACKED is a self-determined platform that seeds new experimental works by First Nations artists, rooted in creative exploration and led by the artists themselves.

Six Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists based in Victoria will be supported by YIRRAMBOI Festival to create and present a 20-minute excerpt of new experimental work. These excerpts will be presented as two distinct triple-bill showings under the two specific genres of experimental theatre and experimental dance at YIRRAMBOI Festival 2027.

Selected artists will receive a $10,000 fee, alongside mentorship from leading First Nations practitioners, rehearsal space, accessibility provisions, technical support, and industry connections.

YIRRAMBOI have a strong commitment to d/Deaf, Disabled, neurodivergent, and regional artists.

Applications have been extended and now close at midnight, Sunday 19 July 2026.

This exhibition examines language’s adaptability, diversity, and ability in shaping our approach to social and physical environments. Through language, we engage with the world around us, igniting and supporting connections to family, culture, and site. In spoken word, sign, and song, participants reflect on their experiences of how language functions and continues to unfold within their contexts.

White brick walls, natural light, blackout capabilities and a sleek black floor make Meat Market’s Stables an ideal space for theatre seasons, presentations, exhibitions, creative developments and more.

Meat Market’s Stables has housed everything from theatre seasons and art shows to furniture exhibitions and product launch events. A blank and versatile space, the Stables can be customised to suit a variety of requirements. Consisting of three spaces, one measuring at 200 square metres and the other two at approximately 100 square metres, the Stables has a total floor space of around 440 square metres and a maximum capacity of 180.
