Statement on Zone Red and the Role of Public Art

Yarra is a vibrant creative community where art sparks dialogue, reflects our history, and drives change. Public art is a powerful tool for education and engagement, bringing complex issues into shared spaces where they can inspire reflection and action.

Yandell Walton’s Zone Red exemplifies this, making the urgent realities of climate change visible in the public realm and fostering critical conversations within the community. The work’s digital clock, displayed prominently on the heritage plinth in Edinburgh Gardens, marks the countdown to 2030—the year by which the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states emissions must be reduced by 45% to limit global warming below 1.5ÂșC. This is more than just a statistic; it represents a tipping point with profound consequences, from severe weather events to rising sea levels and ecological loss.

The recent acts of derision and vandalism against Zone Red are deeply disappointing. They underscore the need to stand by our artists and recognise the vital role public art plays in sparking dialogue, challenging perspectives, and driving meaningful change.
