That moment just before the first note.

Eyes down, mic stand in hand, stage lights glowing behind her. Every singer knows this one. The quiet, the nerves, and the little voice asking if you're really ready.

And then she sings anyway.

That's what we love most about learning music. It isn't only about hitting the right notes. It's about finding out you can stand up in front of people and do something that once felt impossible.

If your child loves to sing but isn't sure about the spotlight yet, that's completely normal. Most of us weren't ready at the start either. We just needed a friendly place to find our voice at our own pace.

Playing alone in your bedroom is one thing. Looking across a stage and catching the eye of the person next to you, just before the song kicks in, is something else entirely.

Bass, guitar and drums all locked together, each person doing their own part so the whole thing works. Nobody can carry it alone, and nobody has to.

That's the part of learning an instrument that's easy to miss at the start. The lessons and the practice are really about getting you to a moment like this one, where you're part of a band and the sound in the room is something you built together.

Watch the hands for about ten seconds. Then watch the face.

Everything is going at once here: sticks flying, feet working, eyes tracking the next fill. And this is a 12-year-old doing it, looking completely calm. That's what a drum lesson does when it starts to click. The chaos turns into something you can actually control.

Nobody sits down on day one and plays like this. It starts with one beat, played slowly, over and over until it feels like yours. Then you add another. Then a fill. Then one day you look up and you're playing.

An electronic kit also makes it easier to fit into real life, which helps the practice happen.

Big stage, big lights, a microphone stand in the way and a screen full of colour behind her. And she's looking at the music, completely in the zone.

That's the thing about performing on keys. The nerves are real, but once the first notes start, the room sort of disappears. All that's left is the next bar, then the one after.

It's a lot to ask of a young player, and it's exactly why those moments stay with kids for years. They remember being up there and playing it anyway.

The bass player is rarely the one everyone's watching. They're the one holding the whole song together.

Look at that face. Eyes up, listening hard, locked in with the rest of the band. A bass player's job is to feel where the beat is going and be there a split second before anyone notices. It takes a good ear and a lot of focus, and it's a very cool thing to be able to do.

It's also one of the best ways into playing in a band. Bass players are always in demand, and you don't need years of experience to get started. A few lessons in, you can already be playing along to songs you love.

Look at that face. Stick in the air, eyes on the moment, and absolutely nowhere else he'd rather be.

Drums have a way of doing that. There's no drifting off when you're keeping the beat for everyone else on stage. You have to listen, watch, count and commit, all at once. Kids who find it hard to focus on other things can surprise you with how switched on they are behind a kit.

And then there's the feeling afterwards, when they walk off stage a little taller than when they walked on.

Hands up if your child has ever been told to "sit still and listen" and wished music class could be a bit more like this.

Mondays just got a lot more musical in Kalkallo North.

We've started weekly keyboard classes there, and if the photo is anything to go by, the kids are already having a great time. Some of the best learning happens when you're moving, clapping, copying the teacher and laughing when you get it slightly wrong. Nobody's worried about being perfect. They're just getting into it.

There's something about sharing one microphone that says more than words could. Two heads bent over the same keyboard, one small voice leaning into the other's confidence.

You can tell this wasn't the girl's first time up there, not really. It's the kind of comfort that only comes from someone steady sitting right beside you, cueing you in without you even noticing you needed it.

That's usually how it starts for our younger students. Not a solo spotlight moment, but a shared one. A teacher or an older student close enough to lean on until the nerves settle and the voice just comes out.

Solo practice gets you far, but everything changes the moment you lock into a rhythm with someone else on stage.

Watching our students team up at Musicland Melbourne for the student concert was such a buzz. There is a special kind of energy that happens when a bassist and singer hit that same groove together under the lights.

Learning an instrument is about so much more than practicing scales in a quiet bedroom. It is about building real confidence, finding your people, and experiencing what it feels like to make live music together.
