Introducing our next Serse cast member, Kate Amos ✨

You may remember Kate from her “standout” (Beat) performance as Athena in Lyric’s The Children’s Bach in 2024, or as Milly in Our Man in Havana. Kate made her Opera Australia principal artist debut as Arkie Whiteley in Whiteley, and has also appeared as Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro.

Now she joins Serse as Romilda, caught at the heart of a tangled romantic rivalry.

Catch Kate at Gasworks Theatre, Albert Park, 10–13 September, with a limited preview on 10 September.

We are delighted to welcome Naomi Flatman to the cast of Serse as Arsamene, Serse’s lovestruck brother and rival for Romilda’s affection.

In 2021 she won the 97th Herald Sun Aria and Australian Liederfest, and in 2018 was winner of the Australian Concerto and Vocal competition.

Since 2024, Naomi has been a member of Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck, performing in the chorus, covers and smaller roles. Her recent credits include Rosina in The Barber of Seville and roles in Elektra at the Festival of the Aegean in Greece.

Conducting Serse is Lyric Opera’s Artistic Director Patrick Burns.

Patrick says Serse perfectly captures what makes Händel’s operas so enduring:

We’re delighted to welcome designer Christina Logan-Bell back to Lyric for Serse!

Christina first designed for Lyric in 2014 for Werther, returning in 2017 for The Japanese Princess. We’re thrilled to have her bringing her creative vision to Händel’s wonderfully chaotic world of Serse.

We're thrilled to welcome director Beng Oh back to Lyric Opera of Melbourne for Händel's Serse. After bringing last year's Song from the Uproar: The Lives and Deaths of Isabelle Eberhardt by Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek to life, we're excited to see his vision return to the rehearsal room.

Beng is an experienced Asian Australian director and theatre maker who has staged a wide range of productions. He’s passionate about diversity, new work and q***r theatre. He trained at the Victorian College of the Arts, and is a member of the Lincoln Center Theatre Directors Lab. Recent productions include the Australian premiere of Song from the Uproar: the Lives and Deaths of Isabelle Eberhardt by Missy Mazzoli for Lyric Opera, Soul of Possum by Brodie Murray (Fortyfivedownstairs), Mr Big: aka Tatay, A Transwoman and That Tiring Tune! by Dax Carnay-Hanrahan (Tayotayo Collective), Soldier Boy by Anthony Hill (Theatre Works) and Fuel by Robert Reid (Motley Bauhaus). Upcoming productions include Fall by Michele Lee (Wit Incorporated).
