We just completed a mosaic project before the holidays. I showed the students images of Antoni Gaudi’s magical buildings in Barcelona. Particularly the fantastical Park Guell and the amazing Casa Batllo that has a roof that looks like a spine of a dragon. I am particularly fond of Gaudi because Barcelona was the first place I travelled to as a young adult with friends and was so blown away by with the beauty of the city and the incredibly imaginative buildings of Gaudi and how they incorporated elements of the distinctive broken tile mosaics called trencadis. Of course for the kids smashing the tiles was a highlight! We kept the designs and colour choices simple and produced such great pieces that I’m going to post multiple pages so I can showcase all the student’s work.

Portraits are hard! There are so many elements to consider, firstly the initial drafting of the subject, then there is tone and colour and because we look at others all the time we are very aware of how faces look and any mistakes. But it is something kids want to learn so to reduce the difficulty I had the kids paint on black and white printed images of themselves and reduced the colours to a monochrome palette - so one colour plus black and white so we could concentrate on tone. But it is still not at all easy, as even noticing where light and shade are on a face was a new thing to consider. These pictures are mainly done grade 5 & 6 students and they did a fantastic job! We were also inspired by Picasso’s blue and rose periods but to my surprise most of the students chose blue despite it being a sadder colour?? These works were inspired by Alberto Giacometti - the great Swiss C20th sculptor whose work ‘Pointing Man’ has the world record for being the most expensive sculpture ever sold, at $US141.3million! I looked at some of his works with the prep - gr3 class and they thought his sculptures looked spooky, weird, sad & creepy. We then talked a bit about what the times he lived in were like - some of them knew that there had been 2 big wars in the past century. I confirmed that he lived through these 2 wars and like all artists that would have affected him so it was no wonder his works look sad, but that of course their lives are very different so their work should express their lives. So we used the method that Giacometti used - plaster bandages on a wire armature to create works that express what they are into. A fun and extremely messy project. Great work!

This project was conceived in response to the desire that a lot of young boys have to draw weapons. We looked at the work of the Australian artist Ex de Medici who does these exquisite watercolours depicting weapons but making them unusable by merging them with plants or moth skins to create weapons for peace. So we tried to do the same by somehow transforming the weapons we drew. We used a combination of water colours and. Ol outed pencils to make these lush images. These artists range from grade 2 to grade 6. We recently completed a project illustrating fantasy creatures, figures or landscapes using watercolour and gouache.
This was a very popular project with lots of pictures of dragons created. We explored the watercolour technique of wet on wet to create transparent atmospheric backgrounds and then using the lovely matte, opaque gouache paint to render the creature or figures on top. Really gorgeous works were created.

Have just finished a project with the Monday class who are aged from prep to grade 3 looking at Picasso’s blue and rose period because there is a huge Picasso exhibition on at the NGV at the moment which some of the kids have attended. Picasso is such a giant of C20th art and so influential that it is important to know about him but I do also struggle with his hideous misogyny (which isn’t something I discussed with the kids but I feel is important to note). We did discuss how the use of the colour blue or rose made us feel and the kids chose to do their self portrait either in one or the other - I found it surprising that most chose blue as that is a sadder colour but also the favourite colour of many. I had made up various shades of blue and rose by adding white or black and looking at black and white photos of themselves we looked at which areas of our image were light or dark and how that would transfer to the blue/rose colours. It was the first look at tone and they did so well.

We’ve just finished a clay sculpting project called on the theme ‘what animal (other than human) would you be? It provided a moment for the kids to think about how they saw their own personality, what characteristics they might aspire to or how they thought others saw them. Of course it is also a fun way to remember that we are animals also!! We looked at other artists who use anthropomorphism, combining animal & humans and why - usually for environmental reasons - and then started drawing using reference of the chosen animal from the front and then also in profile - it is important to consider both views when sculpting. Then there was the question of what this animal portrait bust would be wearing on its human shoulders? Next it was starting sculpting in clay - each bust is about 10cm tall (except Carla’s dragon which is double that). Once sculpted, they were dried, then bisque fired, then glazed and fired again. So it has been a long winded project and I have only just got the last ones back from the kiln. But It has been one of my favourite projects to do with the kids and engaged all my classes (except the oldest teens), so 80 students over 6 classes aged 7-14 yrs and with such wonderful results that I am going to post a picture of every single sculpture to celebrate their wonderful achievement!!!

Don’t you love this time of year - the season of the great redistribution also known as Darebin Winter Hard Rubbish Collection. Pictured is the stash I collected which is a clue to ArtClub’s 2022 end of year exhibition/party/extravaganza. Always a highlight of the year for Art Clubbers we have had a 2 year hiatus - like the rest of world - so this year we are planning for it to be bigger than Ben-Hur, albeit in a suburban backyard using second hand (but disinfected) materials. Watch this space!

Last weekend I worked with Artplay and Rising to run a workshop in conjunction with the Patricia Piccinini’s exhibition ‘A Miracle Constantly Repeating’. Originally Patricia was going to take the kids around the exhibition herself but unfortunately was unable to due to contracting Covid which was such a shame, so one of the tour guides took us around instead. It was a really a great experience for the kids to see her work and have it explained. Initially a lot them found her super real hybrid creatures, or as she likes to call them ‘chimeras’ confronting but later came to appreciate them once her ideas were explained. We then went back to Artplay to create our own chimeras from collage.

Art Classes for 6-15 yr olds

Art Club Northcote's art classes for children (aged 6-12 years) and young people (aged 12-15 years) are both fun and challenging. It is run by artist and mother of two sons, Sue Davis from her welcoming studio in Northcote, Melbourne.

At Art Club we balance skills development with nurturing self expression. Each week we explore the work and ideas of an artist and use this as inspiration to experiment with materials and techniques. These projects are adapted to the specific age groups from 6yrs to 15yrs as well as responding to the kids' own interests and current exhibitions in Melbourne.
