Arts Centre Melbourne and The Australian Music Vault is saddened to hear of the passing of legendary drummer, singer and songwriter Rob Hirst.

Hirst was best known as drummer and founding member of legendary Australian band Midnight Oil. Straddling the rock/surf/punk divide, Midnight Oil rode the pub rock wave of the 1970s and 1980s with a strong social conscience, raising audience awareness of the dangers posed by environmental destruction, nuclear armament and our continuing failure to reconcile with our Indigenous and First Nations peoples. As well as a powerhouse drummer, percussionist and backing vocalist, Hirst was a key songwriter for the band and wrote or co-wrote many of the Oils greatest hits, including ‘Beds are Burning,’ ‘Dead Heart,’ Blue Sky Mine’ and ‘The Power and the Passion.’

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Hirst also worked on a number of musical side projects, inclusing Ghostwriters which he formed with Hoodoo Gurus’ bassist Rick Grossman in 1990. Many of these projects included other members of the Oils and allowed the group to explore different musical styles including blues (Backsliders, The Angry Tradesmen) and surf rock (The Breaks).

Recently, Hirst auctioned off his iconic Ludwig drum kit to raise money for two charities, Support Act and Music NT’s Fix 'Em Up Truck campaign. A remarkable fundraising effort was mounted by the Midnight Oil fan group, The Powderworkers, who raised tens of thousands of dollars to purchase it. They have offered the kit to the Australian Performing Arts Collection to ensure it is preserved and remains available to the public for generations to come.

In 2015 Hirst was at Arts Centre Melbourne to launch The Making of Midnight Oil, an exhibition celebrating the band's history, impact and legacy.

Our thoughts are with Hirst's friends and family.

Australian photographer Marty Williams has been an instrumental figure in documenting live music in Australia. Today makes the 50th anniversary of his first photography assignment, shooting Deep Purple and Little River Band at Festival Hall on the 25th November 1975.

Williams went on to shoot for publications like Juke Magazine and Rolling Stone, while capturing raw performance imagery of bands like The Cruel Sea, Nick Cave, The Angels, The Clouds, The Falling Joys, Divinyls and Paul Kelly.

Williams’ photographs have featured in the Australian Music Vault many times over the years, and today we share a few of our favourites here to mark the occasion.

The Australian Music Vault is proud to celebrate pop icon and trailblazer Jessica Mauboy with a brand-new photographic display honouring her remarkable career. The display follows her induction into the National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMA) Hall of Fame.

Vocal duo Vika & Linda Bull have long been some of the most formidable voices in the business. And some of the nicest.

The sisters return to the Arts Centre Melbourne stage this month as guests of Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski's Conversations Live show. In preparation for their appearance, we look back to when we spoke to the Bulls for our Long Play series, and got the low down on the time Iggy Pop invited them – or more specifically, himself – to collaborate.

Conversations Live with Sarah Kanowski and Richard Fidler – as heard on the ABC – happens at Hamer Hall on 18 August.

The Australian Music Vault is saddened to hear of the passing of legendary rock ‘n’ roll singer Marcie Jones. In 2017, we interviewed Marcie as part of our Long Play Series, where she shared insights into her remarkable career.

Born in 1945, Marcie Jones began her music career as a teenager when rock ‘n’ roll began to emerge in Australia. In a male-dominated scene, she performed as a featured singer with The Thunderbirds and Normie Rowe and The Playboys. But Jones is best known as the lead singer of the all-girl vocal group Marcie and The Cookies. The group grew to prominence in the 1960s and were much sought after guests both on stage and screen. In a career spanning six decades, Marcie worked both nationally and internationally alongside artists including Normie Rowe, Cliff Richard, The Monkees and The Seekers.

In this interview, Marcie discusses the early days of rock ‘n' roll in Melbourne’s ballrooms; her time working with Normie Rowe, Johnny Young and Olivia Newton John on the television program, The Go!! Show, and the challenges of balancing work and life as an international touring artist.
