STACK'S FRIDAY FLICK - 'High Fidelity' (2000)
How many people discovered 'Evil Dead 2' because of 'High Fidelity'? π
That one scene alone probably convinced an entire generation of movie geeks to sell Sam Raimi's cult horror classic to their unsuspecting partners.
Based on Nick Hornby's novel, 'High Fidelity' smartly relocates the story from London to Chicago, a change that works surprisingly well. The result is a rom-com for music lovers, one that speaks equally to record-store snobs, hopeless romantics, and anyone who's ever overanalysed a breakup.
John Cusack is perfectly cast as Rob Gordon, a record store owner revisiting his failed relationships in an effort to understand where it all went wrong.
Along for the ride is a terrific ensemble including Joan Cusack, Tim Robbins, Lisa Bonet, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Lily Taylor, Sarah Gilbert, and a scene-stealing Jack Black, whose performance helped catapult him to Hollywood stardom.
Funny, insightful, endlessly quotable, and packed with great music, 'High Fidelity' remains one of the best adaptations of a Nick Hornby novel and one of the great relationship comedies of its era.
