NOW OPEN | UNCANNY WAYFINDERS, group exhibition

LONG & STENT’s glassworks extend their fascination with the sensual, bodily and organic, transforming glass into tactile, almost fleshy forms that appear to stretch, sag, swell and droop. Their surreal, elongated shapes mimic the forms and textures of the natural environment, blurring the distinction between body, landscape and organism. At once playful and uncanny, the works use the translucency and fluidity of glass to create objects that feel strangely alive - somewhere between geological formations, plant life and fragments of the body.

UNCANNY WAYFINDERS brings together paintings that navigate memory, emotion and imagination through vivid colour, shifting landscapes and dreamlike encounters. Each artist offers a different way of seeing - where places we think we know turn into something more elusive, atmospheric and uncanny.

DANI MARTI's large-scale installation artwork, 'N**E (after Teresa)', elegantly holds a tall space of Maitland Regional Art Gallery. This piece, inspired by his dear friend, the fashion designer, Teresa Helbig, demonstrates MARTI'S interest in the juncture where abstraction transitions from clarity to flamboyance, and evolves into something richer and multi-faceted.

Dani Marti was born 1963 Barcelona, Spain and lives and works between Sydney, Australia and Glasgow, U.K. Having held over 45 solo exhibitions in 25 years, in 2022 Marti was honoured with a significant mid-career survey at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery.

ROBERT OWEN's 2003 painting, 'Cadence #1 (a short span of time)', is architectural in scale and holds a prominent position on the walls of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, in the sculpture gallery of Naala Badu, lower level 2.

'Science and reverie are united in this overwhelming and immersive field of subtly graded high-keyed colour variations. It was initially conceived for a competition for a public artwork for the foyer of the Bureau of Meteorology in Melbourne. Owen's very personal response to the imprecise science of predicting the weather was to devise his own chart to record his emotions over an 80-day period. 'I thought if they can measure atmosphere, I must be able to measure emotions. So using a colour tabulation, I intuitively picked how I felt every half hour during the day.' LYDIA WEGNER | FINALIST, NATIONAL WORKS ON PAPER


Congratulations to LYDIA WEGNER, who is exhibiting as a finalist in the National Works on Paper (NWOP) exhibition, with the exhibition launch taking place this evening at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery.

NWOP is one of Australia's leading awards and exhibitions for contemporary artists nation-wide. LYDIA WEGNER's work 'Aqua Orange' was selected as one of 68 finalists, out of a selection of over 900 entries.

LYDIA WEGNER makes meditative, abstract images with a playful undertone. To understand this artist, one might consider her as a painter using photographic gels, a stage director, or a maximal minimalist. These designations hint at her studio practice, which involves selecting, arranging, lighting, and photographing objects on a tabletop. While the photographed objects may seem unassuming, WEGNER’s work possesses an alchemical quality, turning the mundane into the extraordinary.

NWOP 2026 will be open from Saturday 5 September until Sunday 22 November.

NOW OPEN | UNCANNY WAYFINDERS - Introducing GEORGIA HARVEY

We are very excited to be featuring incredible ceramic works by Georgia Harvey in our current group exhibition UNCANNY WAYFINDERS - open until 26 September.

Harvey creates small idiosyncratic sculptures with a fond nod to ritual objects of the ancient world, her hybridised figures serve as allegorical reference points or as conduits of anima, playing with the belief that inanimate objects can become invested with a kind of liveliness when the observer connects with something from their past, or from deeper back in time.

Harvey’s professional life as a conservator, with its focus on material investigations and studies into stories and cultural ties of objects is deeply embedded in her creations and studio practice.

Harvey has previously exhibited with Craft Victoria, Boom Geelong, Saint Cloche and Incinerator Gallery. Her practice has been recognised through several awards, grants and residencies, alongside media coverage and publications in The Design Files, Journal of Australian Ceramics, Ceramics Now and ABC Radio National.

NOW OPEN | UNCANNY WAYFINDERS, group exhibition

JULIE RRAP has been a defining figure in a generation of feminist art in Australia, leaving an indelible mark with a powerful body of work spanning four decades. Since the mid-1970s, RRAP has created photographs, sculpture, performance, and video art that centres around the representation of her own body.

RRAP's 'Secret Strategies/Ideal Spaces' (1987) is a celebrated series of performative, photographic works created in 1987 based on her observations of French museums during her artist residency at the Power Cite International de Arts in Paris. This work serves as a critical commentary on shifting historical hierarchies and gender dynamics within art history. The 'Secret Strategies, Ideal Spaces' series emerged during the second wave of feminism, an era marked by questioning societal norms and re-evaluating women's roles.

A multi-spread feature article, COLOUR FIELD, in Look Magazine, explores SAVVAS' immersive exhibition, PURPLE HAZE, now open at Orange Regional Gallery.

"Atomic: Purple Haze is a shimmering landscape of purple, green and blue spheres, an expanded painting that breaks away from the canvas into three dimensions, like a pointillist explosion. The work recalls the purple fields of flowering Paterson’s Curse which Savvas says ‘blanketed my hometown of Canberra in the springtime during my childhood’.
‘After I moved to Sydney, whenever I would return to Canberra, I would know that Canberra was coming up because you’d see this intoxicating purple haze that would appear across the landscape.’ " - the AGNSW LOOK Magazine editor, Susannah Smith, in conversation with SAVVAS.

DESMOND LAZARO's remarkable paintings commissioned by AGNSW are highlighted in the recent ABC article on the current exhibition, 'Avatar: Forms of Vishnu'.

'Interlaced through the show are captivating contemporary responses to the stories of Vishnu, including a diptych by British Indian painter Desmond Lazaro, which hangs next to an ancient Cambodian sculpture of Vishnu. Together, they set a tone that is fresh and familiar.
