Today is our amazing team members Zach’s birthday - who personifies our name Good Neighbour.

He lives and breathes the idea of what a good neighbour is.

When he is not dedicating his time to cleaning up the environment, or serving the homeless, he is fighting to get musicians paid!

He puts his hand up first to help others, he remembers everyones name in the wider group of Mushroom staff, and truly takes the time to learn more about them, include them, raise them up and attend and support as many gigs as he can!

MG would be proud!

We are so thrilled to have him on the team. He truly is a Great Neighbour!

Happiest of birthdays Zach!

Please join us if you can.

The report also found that while Australia’s recording industry revenue has increased significantly since 2021, 'much less of that money is going to the Australian artists who create the music.’

A former Spotify executive has exposed how streaming music algorithms from industry giants are killing Australian music, revealing the dramatic drop-off in local artists featured on the world's biggest services.

Will Page, Spotify's former chief economist, revealed artists appearing on services such as Spotify, YouTube, and Amazon, have fallen by 20 per cent between 2021 and 2024, and that while revenue from Australian music increased by 25 per cent from 2021, the artists' share shrank by 30 per cent.

The World vs AI - has Australia got it right? What about the performers, are they priced into the system?

As the rest of the world wakes up today, they’re waking up to a potential precedent. Australia has just become one of the first countries to firmly reject a copyright exception for AI training, a move that elevates creator consent to a matter of law.

This hails from the US Constitution. It was recognised that progress in science, literature, and the useful arts (meaning inventions and technology at the time) would benefit the nation.

By granting authors and inventors temporary monopolies over their creations:
Authors could profit from their writings (early basis for copyright).
Inventors could profit from their discoveries (basis for patents).

Most interestingly; The temporary nature of these rights ensures a balance: creators are rewarded, but ultimately their works enter the public domain, benefiting everyone.

It seems to me that what is missing here is balance for all to benefit - not just an earnest public or billion dollar tech companies.

The creators of the art, the actual creators from songwriters to musicians and producers - they need to be remunerated and protected as this was the intention behind the birth of copyright.

We’re proud to share that our very own Susan Cotchin will be VMDO Expert in Residence this June, leading sessions on something close to our hearts: neighbouring rights.

This session is all about helping performers and their teams understand how these rights work, what’s changing across Australia and NZ, and how they connect to long-term, generational income.

Susan will also unpack the global neighbouring rights landscape — where it’s at, where it’s headed, and what artists everywhere need to know.

Royalties Recovered: Neighbouring Rights Are Back for ANZ Performers

Many musicians are unaware of neighbouring rights and the potential income stream that exists through these royalties. Neighbouring rights are universally recognised, but legislation varies from country to country. In Australia, the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA) collects royalties from neighbouring rights.

Recently, the United Kingdom lifted a 12-year freeze that now allows Australian performers to receive payments when their recordings are used on radio, TV and in public spaces.

As part of the Experts in Residence program, Susan Cotchin from Good Neighbour will offer limited free 1:1 one-hour sessions about neighbouring rights. Susan is a global authority on neighbouring rights. During the sessions she will provide advice and explain the pathways for performers to receive royalty payments.

Sessions are available to Victorian music professionals and will be relevant for lawyers and managers working to protect and maximise international income for their clients.

So very in awe Empire of the Sun 👏👏👏

The first-ever Rolling Stone AU/NZ Musicians on Musicians series is here!

Each year, Rolling Stone’s MoM special invites artists to interview each other about life, music, and everything in between.

We went big for our inaugural local edition, uniting some of the biggest artists in Australia and New Zealand for revealing conversations.

Leading the way are global stars Empire of the Sun’s Luke Steele and Tones And I, who got together for a fascinating discussion about the simplicity of great music, the power of self-acceptance, and much more.

The duo grace the cover of our December-February issue, which hits newsstands from Thursday, December 12th.

As well as Luke and Tones, Australia and New Zealand’s first Musicians on Musicians edition features intimate and illuminating conversations between INXS’ Andrew Farriss and 5 Seconds of Summer’s Ashton Irwin, New Zealand pop icons BENEE and Bic Runga, electronic groups Confidence Man and Orbital, Australian singer-songwriters Kasey Chambers and Thelma Plum, and close collaborators Stan Walker and Kobie Dee.

Rolling Stone AU/NZ’s special Musicians on Musicians issue is out December 12th.
