DisColourNation

DisColourNation DisColourNation is not currently affiliated or active as a student theatre group. DisColourNation amplifies diverse voices and experiences.

A collective created by artists of colour, DisColourNation is made up of actors, writers, and musicians ready to share our stories. We work as a collective and it is through collaboration that we aim to explore stories rarely told on stage using unique and often musical ways. Our first collaboration was "THE UNBEARABLE WHITENESS OF BEING" for Tastings 2016 which was later nominated for Best Ensemb

le and won Best Direction at the Union House Theatre Awards. Energised by enthusiastic audiences and student theatre's obvious need for diversity, we will be creating a full version of the show for May 2017.

REVIEW
********************************
"From the minute the audience walked into the Guild Theatre, DisColourNation’s ‘The Unbearable Whiteness of Being’ made an impact. Each audience member was stopped and asked if they identified as a person of colour. Those who said yes got a Freddo chocolate; the rest sat down empty handed. It was clever, allowing the audience to experience the marginalisation that was explored throughout the piece. Without explicitly stating it, the piece stuck very much to the culture of Melbourne University, exploring the limits POC face in student theatre and the forms of racism that still exist within our generation. Switching between musical numbers and monologues, the ‘Unbearable Whiteness of Being’ was funny in its delivery, and got a lot of laughs. But at the same time it was very much a serious piece, in no way subtle with its impact, revealing that our student culture is not as inclusive as we’d like to believe. Undoubtedly a thought-provoking and important piece of theatre."

CALLOUT FOR PEOPLE OF COLOUR (Melbourne) TO SHARE THEIR STORIES*

DisColourNation is currently working on a v2 of their highly acclaimed, super successful run of The Unbearable Whiteness of Being (a musical theatre exploration of systematic racism in student theatre) and would love to have your input! We would love to invite you to come by the University of Melbourne for a chat, solidarity, and great laughs while we work on writing new material that encompasses the great diversity of all people of colour regardless of background. We are especially interested in exploring the intersections of oppressed identities and want to reach out to our q***r, trans, and disabled friends.
This will be an autonomous event.

DETAILS:
Where: University of Melbourne Graham Cornish A, lvl 2 Union House
When: 11am -1:30pm, 1st December
Who are we: We are a collective of People of Colour who are sick of the structural racism present in student (and amateur, and professional) theatre.
Why: Because you're worth it ;)

OPTIONAL:
After this session we will work on writing and developing new material for our show. We would like to extend the invitation for people to join us in the creation of this work as devisors/actors etc. If this interests you, we will be continuing our work after a short lunch break and fill you in on what this will entail.
