“The best examples of effective public space are not counted off as requisite square feet in boardrooms but are responses to reality. Spaces that are enduringly successful pockets of life and activity because they both service and appeal to fundamentals of community needs and human desires.
When people feel invested in their own public spaces, they feel alive.” – Hugo Macdonald

The Dancing With Gravity performance for our launch night was powerful, confronting and sensual. A local Melbournian contact improvisation group, their practice is about tuning into the subtle impulses of the self and others – sharing weight, touch, and movement awareness. We hope you felt it.

A lot of people have been asking if the Atmosphere sauna prototype is heated. It’s a good question. For this particular prototype and experiment, we are focusing on what it is, other than heat, that makes sauna culture so desirable. To hone in on this we have chosen to intentionally remove the element of heat in order to be able to investigate the often intangible experiential and sensory dimensions of saunas.

We want to see what happens when people enter the sauna fully clothed, without the physical benefit of sweating, and how people leave feeling. Usually, prototyping is not applied to the built environment, so this is in itself an experiment to see what insights we can attain from real-life human experience within a potential future space. We believe that this process will allow for a much more considered, future-focused and user-oriented approach to design, architecture and urban development.

The design and materiality of the installation, however, have been constructed so that the sun and people occupying the space will naturally raise the humidity and temperature. So, yes, it will be warm –but it won’t be hot enough for you to take your clothes off!

We hope to see you over the weekend at Fairfield Amphitheatre in collaboration with the

With rapidly shrinking urban spaces, we need to be thinking above and beyond convention when it comes to creating new spaces for our cities and communities. This sauna is moored on the roof of an old factory in an industrial area of Geneva. Shared by local creatives, the petite wooden structure rests poetically atop three wooden beams that overlook artist studios.

A sneak peak from inside the sauna prototype ✨The skin of the structure in made with a PVC waterproof membrane lined with paper to give it a frosted, translucent effect. This lets in a lot of light and creates a self-heating mechanism when the sun is out.

About the installation

As part of Melbourne Design Week 2019, Atmosphere is a 24-hour site-specific artwork and design experiment inspired by the culture, rituals and sensory dimensions of saunas. A curated program of immersive experiences will take place over a 24-hour period of time, within and surrounding the artwork.

With a rich heritage as a community gathering point, saunas were historically a place not only for well-being, but for social connection, discussion, business and eroticism. In a context where shrinking urban spaces are forcing us to rethink shared and communal activities, Atmosphere is an intimate, sacred space where visitors connect to their own interior universe while in close connection to others – effectively blurring the boundaries between personal and communal space.

The work aims to investigate the importance of sauna culture in a modern context as an antidote to changing social and urban conditions and the exclusive ideas of contemporary “wellness”. The work gives rise to a conscious experience of room, place and space – delivering a lasting immersive experience. Through this, we will investigate how the design of public spaces can construct atmospheres that are conducive to both individual well-being and human connectedness.

A live experiment and architectural prototype, the work applies a human-centred design approach to the built environment, allowing visitors to contribute to social research that will inform potential scenarios for future communal spaces. Through emulating the spatial dynamics of a sauna and creating a tempered climate through an exploration of temperature, light, air and sound, the experiment will monitor visitor responses in order to investigate the relationship between atmosphere, individual experience, social engagement and well-being.
