Today we headed to North Port Oval, the iconic home of the Port Melbourne Football Club, to watch the VFL clash between Port Melbourne Football Club and the Tasmania Devils.

What a game it was! The match went right down to the wire and provided one of the most exciting finishes we've seen this season. The atmosphere at North Port Oval was fantastic, and it was great to see two competitive teams put on such an entertaining contest.

With Tasmania set to enter the AFL in 2028, it was also exciting to get a glimpse of the state's football future and the growing passion for the game across Tasmania.

This is a little different from our usual content, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at our day at the footy in a vlog-style format.

We hope you enjoy this video!

An icon of Australian football, a respected player and coach, and one of the bravest men our game has ever known.

Neale Daniher played 82 games for Essendon Football Club before forging a distinguished coaching career. He coached 228 games for Melbourne Football Club and was widely admired by players, supporters and members, including leading the Demons to the 2000 AFL Grand Final.

While serving as General Manager of Football Operations at West Coast Eagles, Neale was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2013. Faced with one of life’s cruellest challenges, he chose to fight not just for himself, but for everyone affected by the disease.

Through FightMND and the Big Freeze campaign, Neale inspired a nation, raised vital funds for research, and showed us all what courage, resilience and hope truly look like.

More than 12 years after his diagnosis, the 2025 Australian of the Year has sadly passed away.

Rest in peace, Neale Daniher.

Your legacy will live on forever, and your fight against “The Beast” will never be forgotten.

For the first time in 174 meetings since 1925, Collingwood Football Club and Hawthorn Football Club have played out a draw.

What an incredible night at the MCG, one of the most enjoyable and dramatic games of the season. Footy at its absolute best.

30 years ago, the AFL nearly changed forever.

In 1996, the Hawthorn Football Club and Melbourne Football Club proposed a merger that would have created the Melbourne Hawks.

On paper, it made sense, but to the members and supporters, it meant losing identity, history, and tradition.

What followed was one of the most passionate moments in AFL history…
A vote that divided supporters, forced leadership changes, and ultimately stopped the merger from happening.

In this episode of Around The Grounds, we take a look back at the planned but failed Melbourne Hawks merger, 30 years on.

Please note: This episode is based on AFL history and various sources. While research has been done, it may not be 100% accurate.

In this episode of Around The Grounds, we have the honour of sitting down with Deaf Australian skiing legend Andrew Swan, who represented Australia at the Deaflympics from 1975 to 1987.

Andrew shares his incredible journey in the world of skiing, from his first involvement in the sport to competing on the international stage at the Deaflympics. Across more than a decade, he became one of Australia’s greatest Deaf skiers through his determination, skill, and passion.

We discuss his experiences competing against the world’s best, the challenges he faced as a Deaf athlete, and the proud moments he has represented Australia. His story is one of resilience, breaking barriers, and inspiring future generations in the Deaf community.

It’s a true honour to share his story. Thank you, Andrew, for your time. We hope you enjoy the interview. To our viewers, thank you for supporting ATG over the years.

Today, the ATG team visited the Newport Railway Workshops Open Day to have a look around and explore the historic site.

While Around The Grounds is usually focused on footy, today we did something a little different. The open day gave the public a chance to walk through the workshops, see historic Victorian Railways trains up close, and learn more about the history of rail in Victoria.

We enjoyed looking around the old locomotives, carriages and displays that show how important the Newport Workshops were to building and maintaining trains for generations of Victorians.

It might not be fully footy-related, but it’s still a great piece of Victorian history and many footy fans would have travelled on these trains to get to the games over the years!

We hope you enjoy this different kind of video from ATG.

Many of us couldn’t hear the commentary and captions weren’t always accurate but we always recognised Dennis Cometti and Bruce McAvaney on our screens throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Their presence defined footy for a generation.

Dennis began his football journey playing 40 games for West Perth in the WAFL before later coaching the club. He started his media career in Perth in the late 1960s and earned his first major commentary break in 1971, calling a representative match between Western Australia and Victoria.

Across more than five decades, Dennis worked with the ABC, Seven and Nine, becoming one of the most respected and recognisable figures in Australian sport. His sharp football intellect, calm authority, and trademark wit produced some of the game’s most memorable calls, phrases that became part of footy folklore.

His partnership with Bruce McAvaney is remembered as one of the greatest commentary duos in the history of the game, particularly during the 2000s, when their chemistry and big-moment calls shaped a golden era of AFL broadcasting.

Dennis Cometti wasn’t just a commentator, he was a storyteller who made moments last forever.

Rest in peace, Dennis.

Vale Marc Ethan. He was a highly respected Auslan interpreter and a respected member of the Deaf community, and his contributions will not be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.
