This is a bittersweet one for us. We farewell a face familiar to anyone who frequents our venue - Abi Lee, front-of-house and bartender extraordinaire. While we are sad to say good bye, it’s for excellent reasons - she has been accepted for music studies in New York! This will be a really special one. 

Abi Lee is an improvising pianist and composer of Korean heritage who calls Melbourne home. This special solo piano performance is a fundraiser for her trip to New York to study Master’s of Music Performer-Composer at The New School for two years. She was accepted into the course this April with a merit scholarship; however, she is in need of extra support as US visa regulations state that she is unable to work for 12 months. This is her last solo performance before heading off, and Abi will take you through the last few years of her life and musical journey in Melbourne.

Richie (they/them) is a Filipino-Australian Naarm-based improviser and composer. With a background in bebop, blues and classical, they draw on influences from Ornette Coleman and Bill Frisell as well as mentorship under Helen Svoboda, Scott Tinkler and Sam Anning.

Restless Forms is two mini piano recitals by Luke Zhang and Sean Kim.

The program reflects their shared journey through Conservatorium training and the
transition beyond it, where musical structure and personal direction feel less fixed.

Each work explores form in different ways, from clarity and balance to fragmentation
and transformation, mirroring a period of uncertainty and change in these two pianists’ artistic lives.

Works by J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Berg, Ravel, George Benjamin, Chopin, Schubert.

The iconic Melbourne jazz trio ‘Browne Haywood Stevens’ featuring the late Allan Browne, Nick Haywood and Tim Stevens are launching a new album.

And Nick and Tim will perform repertoire from the recordings in a duo format, at Tempo Rubato.

Over the past forty years Nick Haywood has become one of the most in demand bassists and educators on the Australian music scene. He has impressive performance and recording credits with both Australian and international artists. 

Tim Stevens is an improvising composer and piano player who specialises in original creative work. His performance credits are mostly in the trio and solo arenas, including a trio with Dave Beck and Ben Robertson, and the Browne – Haywood – Stevens trio in the 1990’s.
