The Furlan/Italian heritage has a home in Matisi St that has strong ties with the multicultural community of Australia. It's important to keep these strong ties bound to our roots our founders have laid.

One Year On: A Tribute to Our Club, Our Community, and Our Legacy

Today marks one year since the devastating fire that left our historic club inaccessible to our community. While the damage was limited, ongoing restrictions have prevented us from returning to the place where family, friends, the community and generations have gathered for decades.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, there have been several concerning attempts to alter the future of our beloved community icon without proper transparency. Despite less than 30% of the building being damaged, obstacles have been placed in the way of its restoration and preservation. These challenges have made it increasingly difficult for us to reclaim and protect this important part of our heritage.

Yet, our commitment remains unwavering. We stand united in our determination to safeguard our club’s legacy and ensure it remains a place for generations to come.

Our club is more than just bricks and mortar. It was built with the hands and hearts of our founders—post-war immigrants who came to Australia seeking a better life. They created this club as a home away from home, a place where friendships were forged, where love stories began, and where families grew. Generations gathered here, bound by tradition, laughter, and an unbreakable sense of belonging.

Since the fire, we have mourned the loss of cherished members—people who held onto the hope that our club would rise again. Though they are no longer with us, we carry their spirit with us and dreams forward. We continue this fight in their memory, for our current members, for our children, and for the future of our community.

Until the day we can once again call our club home, we remain its guardians. We will continue to cherish it, protect it, and keep its spirit alive. Because our club is more than just a building—it is the heart of our community, and that heart will never stop beating.

In Loving Memory of Cesarina Bettiol

This week, we bid farewell to Cesarina Bettiol, who passed away peacefully at the age of 98. Cesarina would have celebrated her 99th birthday this coming May.

Rosie and Tony Dottori, long-time members and supporters of the Furlan Club, have shared their love of culture and tradition with us all through Rosie’s commitment to our Nonna cooking classes. Our hearts go out to Rosie, Tony, and their family during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Cesarina.

In Loving Memory of Mirella Riga

Earlier this month, we lost a member of the Furlan community, Mirella Riga, after her courageous battle with cancer. Mirella was the dedicated administrator of the Sot La Napé magazine for the Fogolârs Furlans of Australia and served as Secretary of the Furlan Club of NSW.

Her commitment for preserving and celebrating Furlan culture has left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Mirella’s kindness and dedication will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Riga family and our sister Club in NSW during this time of sorrow.

Rest in peace, Mirella.

We fondly remember Arnaldo Allegretto, a true pillar of the Furlan Club and an ardent Bocce player. Arnaldo’s deep love for Bocce saw him proudly represent Victoria in the Australian Bocce Championships, while also serving the club as a committee member and bar man. His infectious smile and warm personality endeared him to everyone in the community.

Our President recalls many moments of that infectious smile and Arnaldo's constant encouragement for the club. His dedication and passion continue to inspire us all. Beyond his sporting achievements, Arnaldo’s commitment to his family was unwavering. He shared his love for Bocce with his daughter, cheering her on at competitions around Australia, even traveling to China for a world championship.

You are one of the many that motivates us to fight for the club we know you loved so much, and we feel your presence watching over us. Arnaldo’s legacy of passion, hard work, and community spirit will forever remain with us.

Mandi, Arnaldo, until we meet again.
