ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Kerry Armstrong
EVOLVE Group Exhibition May 28th - June 25th 2026

Kerry Armstrong is an Australian abstract expressionist painter renowned for her bold, large-scale contemporary works. Working with instinctive energy and emotional immediacy, Armstrong creates paintings that function as visual diaries allowing a layering of memory, language, gesture and personal narrative into richly textured, overt surfaces.

Her practice is driven by a desire for connection and self understanding.

Working rapidly and intuitively, the embrace and unpredictable nature of oil paint brings its own distinctive energy to her work. This organic approach to the linen allows each work to reveal fleeting moments of vulnerability, insight and reflection. Through this process, Armstrong transforms deeply personal matter into compelling, emotional landscapes that invite the viewer to find their own story within the work.

Her paintings are held in private and corporate collections throughout Australia, Europe and the United States, and have been featured in public installations. Drawing the needle across memory, emotion and experience, Armstrong creates works that bond fragments of personal narrative into resonant and deeply human visual forms

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Richard Whadcock
EVOLVE Group Exhibition May 28th - June 25th 2026

Richard completed a general fine art course at Bristol Art College (1986-89), followed by a master’s degree in printmaking at the Royal College of Art (1989-91). His art pares down everything that is insignificant to the bare essentials. He is inspired by the natural landscape, as well as pioneering historic artists, such as Cy Twombly, Robert Motherwell, Milton Avery to Vermeer, Turner, and Rembrandt. Based in Lancing, Ireland Richard’s studio lies amongst the undulating peaks and valleys of the Irish coastal scape. After spending a few weeks of residency in Kerry, Ireland, the artist experienced the single biggest in change in his relationship to his work and its influences. Richard is drawn to the way the landscape can sporadically morph into different states, as it vacillates along the coastline: one minute clear, the next capitulating a weather front that sweeps the sea: “Known geographical detail can be expunged by a coastal mist, smudged away by a downpour or bleached out by intense low morning or evening sun. It is these transitions from one state to another that the paintings are dealing with, small periods of time, not really a singular moment as such. They are also not meant to be of a particular place, hence the rarity with which they are titled with a geographical name. This is in some way to stop the name already defining a picture in the viewer’s mind. I aim for them to evoke a place, perhaps in your memories of somewhere you have been to. To describe a feeling, atmosphere during a passage of time. The viewer is bringing something to the painting as well, the painting draws it out of you only to deliver you back through the layers of light and depth.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Daniel Butterworth
EVOLVE Group Exhibition May 28th - June 25th 2026

Daniel Butterworth is a figurative and landscape artist based in Victoria, practicing for more than 20 years. Richly Expressive and gestural, Daniels’ paintings are truly unencumbered. Through employing a diverse and unconventional range of mediums, from oil, house acrylic, linen, canvas and cardboard he connects to the more avante-garde sensibilities of many greats such as Munch, Roberts and Fairwether in their experimental approach with medium and application. Studying art and design at Bendigo tafe (1993) Daniel went on to complete a bachelor of fine arts in painting and drawing at Latrobe University in 1997 as well as diploma of education there later in 2006. Awarded as a Finalist in the Archibald, Doug Moran, Lester, Percival, Jackarandah, Arthur Guy, Kilgour, Naked and N**e, Muswellbrook, Alice Prize and Brisbane portrait to name a few Daniels’ works continually establish themselves as uniquely powerfully and evocative portrayals of humanity and connection. “Painting is my life, I paint every day on whatever is available. Creating work that seems effortless, fresh and accurate is my aim. Connecting through emotions and gesture. The figure is my first love and I continually revisit this genre with an inescapable fascination.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Lisa Morgan
EVOLVE Group Exhibition May 28th - June 25th 2026

I am a painter, originally from New Zealand. I have lived in Sunshine Beach on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland for the past 20 years and paint from a studio in the Noosa hinterland. Having grown up with a highly successful graduate art mother and sculptor stepfather there was always a creative force in my life that eventually led me to a career in the arts.

Mostly I approach my work with an idea of a story at the edge of my mind but usually with little premeditation allowing whatever needs to occur during the process happen organically. Feeling confined to a certain technique or structure is not how I usually work - sometimes my works are soft and floaty, sometimes slightly more graphic, the mood changes with whichever way the painting takes me.

My work talks of certain places in landscape or time, in seasons and in moments. Each piece has a relevant meaning and importance to me. I enjoy playing with different textures, different detailing, different shapes. Through the medium of paint and canvas there is always a story to tell of the landscape I love.

In moving forward I am experimenting with new ideas and techniques while leaning on some of the practices of the past, incorporating my love of the landscape, the seasons, the shapes and patterns in nature that so absorb me. Transitioning from a somewhat meaningful subject area to expressing myself through a playful, more open and abstract style exploring the idea of “being” of the landscape rather than “about” it.

GROUP EXHIBITION
‘Evolve’
May 28th - June 25th

As we move through the middle of the year, Studio Gallery presents Evolve - a major group exhibition bringing together all represented artists across our five gallery locations.

Evolve explores the shifting nature of artistic practice and the many ways creative work transforms over time. The exhibition considers the quiet and sometimes dramatic movements within a practice: recurring themes, changing influences, altered rhythms, and the subtle recalibrations that shape work over months and years.

Moving beyond the finished artwork alone, Evolve invites audiences into the thought processes and environments surrounding each artist’s practice. Within the gallery, through integrated audio and video responses accessible via QR codes, collectors will gain deeper insight into the artists behind the work — their reflections, influences, studio environments, and evolving direction.

At a time when the world feels increasingly accelerated and uncertain, Evolve asks what it means to continue creating with intention. How do artists respond to external events, technological change, shifting pace, or instinctive creative pull? What patterns emerge over time, and what possibilities lie ahead?

Spanning painting, sculpture, and mixed media works across all four Studio Gallery spaces, Evolve offers both a snapshot of the present moment and a broader conversation about where contemporary artistic practice is moving next.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Gabrielle Jones
EVOLVE Group Exhibition May 28th - June 25th 2026

Working across painting, drawing, sculpture and collage, Gabrielle Jones explores notions of excess and adornment. Her works combine intuitive mark-making with distinct nods to art history, high-lighting movement and time through expressive forms and colours, iconic patterns and textures, and layers of paint. Drawn by the drama, movement and storytelling of Baroque and Rococo art, in particular, Jones borrows their patterns, decoration and ornaments in an abstract conflation of drama and courtly accoutrements. Reflecting on paintings from artists who have been influential in her practice, Jones employs mashed memory while highlighting the embellishment, dé- cor, energy and stillness of these eras. The resulting works are a call and answer, through time and memory, with these artists, expressing the strong sense of the joy in life that is a constant thread throughout Jones’s practice. “When I was seven I nearly drowned - as in a passed-out and needed rescue type of drowning. My memories of that are framed in opposites: the pounding of my heart and the quiet of the engulf- ing water; the dark depths and the light during my ascent to surface; the speed of change from safety to danger, and the deceleration of time while drowning; the liminal place between life and death, here and gone. Looking back, I realise this has been a formative event in so much of my life, and it continues to influence my work. My forms often challenge their boundaries in a bid for freedom and release - sub- jects cross boundaries between still life and move- ment; and forms move from naturalism to expres- sionism. Many works circle back on themselves. All seek a presence beyond logic”.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Johanna Valom
EVOLVE Group Exhibition May 28th - June 25th 2026

Johanna Valom is an oil painter and textile artist based in Perth, Western Australia. Inspired by tapestries inherited from her grandmother, Johanna reflects on the paradoxical emotion of nostalgia and the fleeting nature of memory. She creates abstract landscapes which seek to explore the sublime, the joy, and the whimsy found in mundane every day scenes. Picturesque cottages, dilapidated sheds and untamed bushland all serve equally as inspiration in her works. Johanna’s practice plays with the evocative ability of colour and lucious application of paint; using striking combinations in her focus on abstraction within landscapes. She paints from both direct observation and from memories - in this she continues to consider the importance of both the breaking and preservation of traditions, and the oscillating, tacit dialogue between past and present.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Robert Lemay
EVOLVE Group Exhibition May 28th - June 25th 2026

“With my floral compositions, I capture that feeling you get when you first lean into a bouquet to inhale the scent. I’m conscious of creating a level of realism that is poetic while still retaining the illusion for the viewer of being right in that moment. Some passages will be more brushy and poetic and others will be more detailed. Each painting contains hundreds of these types of choices so that the viewer can be immersed in this floral experience”

Robert Lemay has been working as an artist for over 30 years and has had more than 30 solo shows. His work has been exhibited in Edmonton, Montréal, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria, New York, Milan, as well as London and the Cotswolds in England.

His paintings appear in collections all over the world, including the Canadian Consulate in both New York City and Sydney, Australia. Shaw Communications has named a room, The Robert Lemay Room, in Shaw Court in downtown Calgary. His work is also part of the Canada Council Art Bank and hangs at Clif Lede Wineries in Yountville, California, at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, in Edmonton’s City Hall, and in many prestigious private and corporate collections. He was the recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in 1989 and 1990. He was the inaugural Artist in Residence at Graceland University in Iowa in 2014 and was honoured to be an artist in residence at Pouch Cove Foundation in 2021.
