They may be new members of the Greek Quarter, but Whisky & Alement have been a longstanding part of our precinct since 2010.

Located in Melbourne’s CBD, Whisky + Alement specialises in whisky and is recognised as one of Melbourne’s first modern whisky bars. With an impressive selection and a team who truly know their whisky, they have established themselves as masters of their craft.

Recently, the Greek Quarter, together with some of our members, were lucky enough to join Whisky + Alement for a whisky tasting night, sampling a selection of exceptional whiskies and learning more about the craft, history and expertise behind each pour.

We’re thrilled to welcome Whisky + Alement to the Greek Quarter network. Their passion, expertise and long-standing presence in the precinct make them a valuable addition to our growing network of local businesses.

Dolly Parton gave the world the keys to her heart through her songwriting, signature style and philanthropy – touching millions across the globe.

Giving her the Keys to the City was the least we could do, and in 1987, Melbourne did just that.

Dolly's values of creativity and community are ones Melbourne shares.

We are a city known for our love of music, and we embrace the songwriting legacy she leaves behind.

As a UNESCO City of Literature, we'll keep spreading the joy and importance of reading to the next generation.

And as the inventors of the 8-hour day, we'll be Workin' 9 to 5 in your honour.

Can you outsmart the fairies?

The fairies are throwing open the nest to every smarty pants, know-it-all and pub quiz tragic in Melbourne, and they reckon not one of you has a hope.

So from Wednesday 26 August, trivia takes over Arcane every single week. There’s a host on the mic enjoying himself far too much, $100 cash waiting for the sharpest table in the room, $50 for whoever comes second, and absolutely nothing for the mate who swore blind they knew the correct answer.

Look at Melbourne from above.

Straight streets.
Regular blocks.
A city arranged almost like a giant chessboard.

Now go back more than 2,000 years.

Ancient Greek cities developed highly organised street grids, an approach associated with Hippodamus of Miletus, a 5th-century BCE Greek urban planner and thinker.

His name became associated with what is now known as the Hippodamian plan: a more regular, ordered approach to organising a city.

Fast forward to 1837.

Surveyor Robert Hoddle laid out Melbourne's famous grid, creating the orderly network of streets that still defines the centre of the city today.

Melbourne's Hoddle Grid wasn't copied directly from an ancient Greek blueprint. But its layout has striking similarities to the Hippodamian approach to urban planning.

In fact, the University of Melbourne notes that Hoddle's city grid “mirrors the Hippodamian Plan.”

Two cities. Two very different eras.
But a remarkably similar idea:

A city can be designed around order, structure and the grid.

Ancient Greece isn't just something you find in a museum.

Sometimes, it's hiding in the streets around you.

For generations, Melbourne's Greek Quarter has been a place to meet, celebrate, shop, dine and stay connected to Greek culture. Today, it's also home to a diverse community of businesses that continue to make the Quarter a welcoming destination for everyone.
