Lonsdale Street, Melbourne (1927)

This wonderful 1927 view of Lonsdale Street captures the growing energy and modernization of Melbourne during the late 1920s. I can imagine busy trams, delivery vehicles, and crowds of pedestrians moving through the street beneath rows of commercial buildings and shopfronts. The city was rapidly expanding during this period, with increasing traffic and urban development reshaping the CBD. The atmosphere would have felt practical, busy, and full of economic optimism before the arrival of the Depression years. Streets like Lonsdale formed an important part of Melbourne’s commercial backbone. This image beautifully preserves the pace and atmosphere of city life during the interwar period.

Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week – a time for us to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements.

This year’s theme is ‘All In’, which calls for Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

There’s plenty of ways you can get involved this week, including events at our libraries and a Mabo Day concert.
