With a passion for upcycling, thrifting and sustainability, Laura Frats Art began with a beautiful old painting that was put out for hard rubbish but she saw potential.

After popping to the local op shop for some retro childrens books, she got cutting and pasting, and the rest is history. She loves seeing the nostalgia and joy it brings to people’s faces when they look at her reimagined vintage art.

Travelling on the isolated tracks in Central Australia, I was struck by the beauty of the landscape but also saw the abused environment and neglect created by man. I noticed many abandoned rusting vehicles, rubbish and disintegrating iron machinery that was left on the roadside. My artwork depicts the reds, yellows, greens and browns of the dry outback land. Many of the paintings have been created in situ or from sketches, photographs and experiments using Traditional Ochre. I am one of a few artists in Victoria outside the indigenous people using natural ochre as my main pigment. This makes my art unique. This is a traditional customary use of natural pigments drawn from the land and ground with stone. As part of the exhibition, I would like to present a workshop on the use of Ochre in art. In this exhibition I am including some new and older work which depicts the landscape as a neglected environment. The title of the exhibition reflects not just the iron, rust and ochre found in the colours of the landscape but also the intrusion of manmade iron and rust. Welcome to Louie and the Fox, the home of kids clothes designed to last so long, you’ll see them handed down and enjoyed by child after child.

More than 13 years ago, formally trained pattern maker and seamstress Casey Farrell started designing and making kids’ clothes that were not only practical and durable, but fun and colourful too. Today you’ll find kids’ clothes, burp cloths, (dribble) bibs, scrunchies, reusable kitchen cleaning cloths, and reusable facial wipes to help make life with kids a little more manageable.

Every Louie and the Fox creation is still hand-made by Casey at her studio in Moonee Ponds using 100% cotton fabric, and wherever possible fabric designed by Australian artists who share her love of colourful, fun prints.

Nihil Nova is the art practice of Katarina Smirnova, embracing ambiguity and exploring traditional European techniques and mediums through the lens of third culture identity and queerness.

Katarina works with dip pen, ink, gouache and watercolours to draw on inspirations from medieval printmaking, Victorian illustrations, symbolism, heraldry and Slavic folk and decorative art. Through these classical forms they attempt to reclaim and recreate a connection to heritage, history and power.
