Gotta love the hounds!! (And the food slaves who take such good care of them)

With much sadness, Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California must cancel the in-person Spring Games 2020 due to the Coronavirus and the restrictions in place. While this was a very difficult decision, we know it is in the best interest of the community at this time. ...

I've never surfed at Butterfly Beach, but I can't think of a much more beautiful place to be waiting for a good wave to come in. Especially this time of day!

This is the 'Auku'u or Hawaiian Black-crowned Night Heron. Sounds impressive, like something out of an animated movie about dragons. Like most herons his fishing skills, or at least his standing-as-still-as-a-statue skills were definitely well honed. The only thing was this particular fishing hole was a Koi pond outside of a restaurant in Waikiki. I think the fish were on to him, and many of them were bigger than him. Of course the guy stalking him with a camera while he stalked his lunch probably didn't help much.

Well this guy sure knows how to pose for his portrait! I found him preening outside of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne, Australia. Perhaps he was hoping to meet the Queen. He seemed to be encroaching on the territory of some other birds who were repeatedly dive-bombing him, but that didn't seem to bother him all that much. He hardly looked up from his important feather arranging. The range of birds, and particularly the calls from the unseen multitudes made the stroll through the gardens seem more like the middle of the rainforest than the middle of a large city.

It's no secret that Hawaii, Waikiki especially, is known for its breathtaking views. But one of the things I enjoy in a place like this is capturing something a little different. Now don't get me wrong, I love a beautiful sunset view and have shot my share of them, but to my eye this has to be one of the most interesting and beautiful images I've ever captured in Hawaii. This is a single image, captured in camera, and not a particularly long exposure since the movement of the boats in their slips would make them unpleasantly blurry over even a matter of seconds. I'm always amazed at the beauty and complexity of lightning bolts as they try to find their way through the atmosphere, and after staring at the structure of these for longer than I probably could accurately estimate I'm convinced that lower one on the left was generally coming straight for us emanating from the bright point in the center of it. An absolutely beautiful evening, and the sunset that preceded it was actually something to behold too, I'll probably share that at a later date.

Recently I had the pleasure of working with Dave at Dave's Dogs. I always love working with small businesses to show off their hard work and restaurants are my absolute favorites. A good chef is an artist in their own right and one look at Dave's Dogs will show you these are no ordinary hot dogs. As with all my food photos, these are very representative of what you'd see if you just went in and ordered. No over the top styling here. In fact, I had the pleasure of sampling these very dogs after the shoot and they were AMAZING! Thanks Dave's Dogs 805!

One of the beautiful California Missions, San Antonio de Pauda is a little off the beaten path compared to some of its peers. But it's well worth the 26 mile drive off the 101 just south of the Monterey peninsula. As with all of the missions, the architecture is beautiful and there are countless opportunities to learn about California's history. This particular day was beautiful and warm, a great day to get some infrared shots that nicely show off the architecture of the main archways, which are not covered in mud plaster. So you can appreciate the beautiful craftsmanship.

Bixby Creek Bridge south of Monterey is one of my favorite places to explore especially in the evening. Any time of day the California coast is beautiful, but along with the glow of the few cars on the highway this evening, the clouds were just starting to roll over the hills like a slow motion waterfall making their way slowly to the ocean. In just a few short minutes the entire scene was wrapped in a soft haze.

It was a really nice evening to take a nice walk under the evening sky! Apparently this evening is a Super Moon, making this a Super Blood Moon Eclipse, but honestly, when it's high in the sky it's hard to tell the size difference. The old Farmers' Almanac referred to the January moon as the Wolf moon, so you might even see it referred to as a Super Wolf Blood Moon Eclipse. Apparently, people REALLY like to name things. Whatever you want to call it, the eclipse was beautiful. I had the good fortune of being in the right spot and out for a walk with my best friend at the right time to enjoy most of the eclipse from the very start.
