I guess due to the current fluid state of the world these weekly updates are kind of necessary. Two changes this week - Andrea's Composer's Circle is unfortunately not going ahead tonight, and after a star turn at the Aus Open Kathleen Halloran came a bit too close to a COVID case and now has to quarantine; Lawson Kennard has kindly stepped in at the last minute to perform on Wednesday instead. As always, we hope everyone stays healthy and safe, and we'll hopefully see you soon.

Monday 31st: closed
Tuesday 2nd: The Catholics – 30th Anniversary Concert
Wednesday: Lawson Kennard Quartet
Thursday: Barney McAll's Non-Compliance Trio
Friday: Andrew Swann Trio: Memphis To Mali
Saturday: Chantal Mitvalsky & The Joe Ruberto Trio
Sunday: MJC Presents Steve Barry Quartet (SYD/MEL)

23/01/2022

Another COVID related update: unfortunately this Monday's performance by Andrea Keller, Sam Anning, and Julien Wilson won't be going ahead and Wednesday's Spirograph Studies show will now be the Luke Howard Trio. The rest of the week (fingers crossed) will be going ahead as planned.

So to recap:
Monday - closed
Tuesday - Katie Noonan Trio
Wednesday - Luke Howard Trio
Thursday - Alma Zygier Band
Friday - The Pearly Shells with Yvette Johannsson
Saturday - Caity Plummer ft Jack Earle's Eight Piece Big Band
Sunday - Melbourne Jazz Co-op presents Tony Gould's Birthday Celebration

Unfortunately due to circumstances out of everyone's control we've decided to cancel both Andrea Keller & Stephen Magnusson's show on Monday 17th and the Jazzlab Orcheztra on Tuesday the 18th. Ticketholders will be contacted as to their options shortly.

We hope everyone out there is staying safe and hope we'll see you all tonight for Daniel Gassin's final show before he heads back to France, and then we'll be back on Wednesday 19th for Yunior Terry's last show before he heads back to New York.

05/01/2022

Unfortunately Friday night's performance by Yvette Johansson and the Joe Ruberto trio will not be going ahead. We apologise for any inconvenience caused :(

In the meantime though we have great gigs every other night of the week that you should all definitely come and check out including Yunior TERRY tonight, James Sherlock tomorrow night, Audrey Powne on Saturday and Holly Moore on Sunday :)

Navigating the Night - DELSINKI

Local musical legend Delsinki has a new song out celebrating Melbourne's live music scene and we got an awesome cameo in both the song and the clip. Just a warning: it's a bit of an ear worm and you'll end up humming the tune all day after listening to it :)

We have so many memories of this band that it's hard to put into words how to feel about this.

From their first residency at Bennetts Lane to the occasional pop up show and side project, The Cat Empire and it's members have been a big part of the fabric of the Melbourne jazz scene and our clubs and it has been a pleasure and joy to see them reach the heights they reached bringing that love of music to the world.

We'll miss them of course, but also look forward to their next chapters. So thank you for the last 20 years, and a toast in your own words:

"Tomorrow is another day, The cats are out to play"

After 20 incredible years of touring and making music together, we have made the decision to disband, and to make way for a new incarnation of The Cat Empire to come to life fronted by Felix Riebl and Ollie McGill.

Will Hull-Brown (Drums), Ryan Monro (Bass-departed the band March 2021), Harry Angus (Vox/Trumpet), Jamshid (Dj Jumps) Khadiwala (Decks/Percussion), and our career-long Manager Correne Wilkie will all be celebrating final moments with The Cat Empire in December 2021.

We have so much to celebrate. We leave each other with full hearts, healthy relationships, and a deep respect for each other and the musical journey we have shared together and with the world.

The spirit of the band will flow through to the next chapter as Felix and Ollie grow The Cat Empire into a global collective with new and exciting music set for release in 2022.

We will celebrate 20 years of the original line-up with final shows in Western Australia, Queensland, and Victoria in December 2021. For those who can't physically attend, tickets will be made available to access a virtual concert of the final event. Tickets on sale Tuesday, September 21 at 10.00 am.

In line with government lockdown restrictions easing we'll be back open for shows tomorrow night (Wednesday). We've got some pretty tight capacity restrictions and everyone will have to be wearing masks, but it'll be great to see everyone again :) Thanks to everyone for helping get the state back to this point, and we're looking forward to hearing and seeing some great bands again.
Well, we knew it was going to be longer than 5 days, we just weren't expecting a whole extra week. We're working on sorting out some alternate dates for the shows scheduled and ticketholders will be contacted ASAP about their options. In the meantime to sate your fix for great local music we've updated our #jazzlablistenparty page (https://jazzlab.club/1541-jazzlablistenparty) to include some releases from this year. It features new albums from Sean Wayland, The Rookies, Sam Anning, Eugene Ball, Ben Hanlon, Anthony Schulz, Mirko Guerrini, Tony Hicks, Niko Schauble, Stephen Magnusson, JK Group, Richard Pavlidis, Nina Ferro, Jake Amy, Andrea Keller, and James Sherlock, and a couple of albums due to be released over the next few weeks by The Pearly Shells and Barney McAll. Have a listen, and if you have any suggestions for additions, please let us know!
