The Australian music scene is no stranger to Thndo (fka Thando). The widely loved, Zimbabwean-born First Lady of Soul and R&B has commanded massive crowds at festivals including Bluesfest, WOMADelaide, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Groovin the Moo, and Woodford Folk Festival, among many others.

Her sold-out shows at Chapel Off Chapel have stunned audiences into standing ovations, with rave reviews following in their wake. Every performance is a statement — a triumph of powerful lyricism, rich-range vocals, and smooth backing instrumentation — propelling the wheel of live music forward, show by show.

Thndo’s previous releases, Digital Love Letters and Life in Colour, weave stories of strength, openness, and conflict alongside themes of love, empowerment, and sensuality. Her creativity is marked by an unabashed honesty and charm. In 2025, she returns with her album Lessons in Love, exploring a renewed connection to both the stage and the creative process. The album features previously released singles Fall, 4EVA, Along the Way, and Forward, all of which have received strong airplay across Australia.

In his quartet, Hispano-Dutch saxophonist and composer Bernard van Rossum breathes life into a body of original compositions — evocative musical landscapes where lyrical melodies float over solid grooves.

The Fiona Burnett Band is an exciting ensemble project featuring virtuosic and lyrical soloists performing contemporary popular music, jazz standards and original works.

Based on Burnett’s album release Imagine on the ABC Jazz label, the band pays tribute to many well-known songs from the canon of popular music through reimagined interpretations of familiar melodies.

Bringing together a dynamic line-up of Fiona Burnett (saxophone), Mina Yu (piano), Christopher Hale (bass) and Rease Cameron (Sydney) (drums), the group delivers a fresh and engaging live experience.

FIONA BURNETT — SAXOPHONE

Fiona Burnett has decades of experience bandleading and forging new creative ground as a performer and composer. Her first major performance was at the Sydney Domain at age 14 in a group led by renowned percussionist Greg Sheehan.

At 21, she founded her groundbreaking all-female group Morgana, recognised for its trailblazing contribution to jazz and women in music. Since then, Burnett has led many projects ranging from large ensembles with orchestration and strings to quartets, trios, duos and solo performances.

She has released nine albums, including four on the ABC label, and has been the recipient of numerous arts grants. She has also held a seat on the Music Board of the Australia Council for the Arts, appointed by the Federal Arts Minister.

A passionate advocate for gender equity in jazz, Burnett is also a respected music educator and currently serves as Coordinator of Secondary and VCE Music at Melbourne Rudolf Steiner School.

She holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne, studying the works of J.S. Bach and John Coltrane, and is recognised internationally for her highly energised, virtuosic soloing and soaring, melodic improvisations on the soprano saxophone.

Tracey Miller brings her acclaimed new album Queen Of The Creek to Jazzlab in a powerful live performance featuring a stellar 10-piece band led by saxophonist and producer Darcy McNulty.

Recorded live at The Archies Creek Hotel and featuring an all-star cast, the album captures a unique moment of collaboration and creativity.

Joining Miller are Jazzlab favourites Tamara Murphy (bass), Hue Blanes (piano), Eamon McNelis (trumpet), and Lachlan Mitchell (guitar).

Young Melbourne drummer Oscar Edwards is preparing for a significant move to the UK to take up the sole undergraduate jazz drums position at the Royal Academy of Music in London. A 2025 James Morrison Scholarship finalist and VCASS graduate, Oscar has established himself as a prominent emerging voice on the local scene, performing alongside musicians such as James Sherlock, Mark Fitzgibbon, Julien Wilson, Grant Windsor, Tamara Murphy, Hugh Stuckey, Ben Robertson, Daryl McKenzie, Gordon Goodwin, Darrin Archer, James Shortland, Miro Lauritz, James Bowers, Tiana Young, James Lockwood, Zoe Frater, and many others.

For this performance at The JazzLab, Oscar leads an ensemble of musicians he greatly admires, presenting a selection of original compositions alongside jazz standards.

This show marks his final local performance before commencing his international studies at the Royal Academy.

Johnny Turner Ensemble (Adelaide) ✨

Johnny Turner is a 19-year-old Adelaide-based musician, composer, arranger, and educator, driven by a love of creative, expressive jazz. As a saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist, he balances strong musicianship with a distinctive compositional voice—writing music that is both tasteful and adventurous, and always rooted in authenticity.

Over the past few years, Johnny has grown through a wide range of performance experiences, including holding the Alto 1 chair in the Generations in Jazz Superband from 2022 to 2024, and performing with artists such as Julian Wilson and Lazaro Numa. Receiving the 2025 COMA Emerging Artist Award and a scholarship to the University of Adelaide’s Advanced Music program marked key milestones, helping to solidify the beginning of his creative journey in tertiary education. In 2026, he was selected as part of the ANJO Youth Big Band on baritone saxophone—an opportunity that will see Johnny Turner performing alongside some of the country’s leading young musicians, as well as international artists Bert Joris and Florian Ross.

He has performed at a wide range of notable venues, including The Gov, the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, the Generations in Jazz Awards Stage, the Wheatsheaf Hotel (for COMA), the Adelaide Town Hall, the North Adelaide Town Hall, the Adelaide Ballroom, the Capri Theatre, Hal’s Hall, Norwood Live, and the Southern Jazz Club, among others. In addition, Johnny Turner regularly performs at restaurants, bars, weddings, and corporate functions, with appearances at venues such as the National Wine Centre and the South Australian Museum.

Influenced by musicians such as Pat Metheny, Jacob Collier, Vanessa Perica, and Chris Potter, Johnny is currently working toward his second album while preparing new music for an upcoming big band project in Adelaide. Alongside performing, he is deeply passionate about teaching and sharing music with others. His goal is to continue growing as a musician and to create music that connects with as many people as possible.
