Funaki

Funaki Funaki is a driving force in the promotion of contemporary jewellery internationally. Shop online or contact us for personal service by email.

Funaki has been recognised as a driving force in the promotion of contemporary jewellery in Australia for 25 years. Our physical location is currently closed but we will reopen in a new Melbourne location in the second half of 2021. The artists we represent are carefully selected on the basis of their personal approach to making. This approach is apparent through their sensitivity, their careful s

election of materials and their skillful, appropriate use of these in line with a clear concept. As well as showing jewellery, Funaki stocks a range of catalogues by represented artists.

OPENING
Thursday 4 June | Helen Britton ‘Things I Love, Things I Fear’

Please join us for the opening from 5.30 - 7.30pm

Exhibition runs until Saturday 11 July and the gallery is open Saturday 6 June 1-4pm, with further Saturdays to be announced.

‘In this exhibition I am presenting small paintings and jewellery. The paintings were made on Awabakal Country at the beginning of the year and are studies of childhood mementos, favourite chocolates, common seashells, from the coast where I grew up. All these things are connected by being ubiquitous or familiar but also slightly uncanny. The jewellery is playful and direct. I have invented a technique to make drawings with fine wires and fill them in with glass I crush in different ways to create a palette of colour, sprinkled here and there with diamonds. Can these paintings and jewels offer companionship, provoke a smile, simply be beautiful? Generated from the child’s wonder within me and reflecting on childhood trinkets, the works relate in their subject matter and way of being made; meditative, intense observations of things I love, and in loving fear for.’

Julie Blyfield is one of Australia’s best known silversmiths, with a distinguished practice over three decades. Using the traditional metalsmithing techniques of chasing and repoussé, Blyfield draws on
in-depth research into botanical specimens and historical silver collections or, in the case of her current exhibition ‘Silver is the Moon’, the traditional botanical motifs and architectural influences of India.

The exhibition continues until May 30, with the gallery open Saturday 30th 12-4pm.

Here’s a throwback to one of my favourite pieces from Australian artist Helen Britton. Made in 2019, ‘Coral Sea’ is a necklace that combines unique technical approaches and material selection, a refined form and sensibility mixed with a playful sense of abundance - so unmistakably Helen Britton.

We’re excited to welcome Helen back to town for a solo exhibition next month. ‘Things I Love, Things I Fear’ opens early June - stay tuned.

Hello from down here 👋🏼

14 years ago, legendary artist Otto Künzli asked his gallerists and friends to take a photo of themselves wearing the iconic ‘Gold Macht Blind’ bracelet - he was looking for very incidental “I just happened to be wearing mine” shots for his 2013 monograph ‘The Book’. I was never happy with my submission and wish I’d been able to send him this instead... taken in the elevator at the I.M. Pei designed Collins Place building right opposite Funaki.

Would you like to own your very own piece of iconic jewellery history? We have some small-medium sized Gold Macht Blind pieces in stock now, with larger sizes on the way.
