Our thanks to The Victorian Drama League Inc for their good wishes and their help promoting our 2026 comedy “You Can’t Take It With You” directed by Richard Burman. Just 3 days to go and 3 shows only (7:30pm Thursday Friday and Saturday)

Chookas 🐥 to the cast and crew of Old Melburnians Theatre Society production of You Can’t Take It With You by Moss Hart and George Kaufman that opens THIS Thurs 16th April for 3 shows only!

Directed by Richard Burman, Alice Sycamore is the sole voice of normality in a family of happy eccentrics. The play’s action takes place in the home of Grandpa Martin Vanderhof, who decades earlier walked out on his Wall Street career for a life of fun raising snakes, collecting stamps, and attending graduation ceremonies. Alice’s mother writes plays, her father makes firework displays in the basement, and her sister practices dance — all with great enthusiasm if not talent. Other characters arrive and “just stay” as part of an extended happy family. All goes well until Alice announces that she has fallen in love with Mr Anthony Kirby Junior, the charming son of her respectable but very pompous Wall Street boss, and the Kirby family arrive to a dinner in honour of the newly engaged couple on the wrong night. The ensuing, (hilariously) disastrous clash of cultures that follows threatens to separate the young couple but of course has a happy outcome.
The brilliant script won its authors a Pulitzer Prize for drama, whilst the film adaptation starring Jimmy Stewart won two Oscars including best film. This play continues to delight audiences with its wit and positive message about living in the moment.

Meet Mark Robins as Martin Vanderhof AKA Grandpa, who walked out on his Wall Street job 35 years ago for a life of fun and hobbies that include raising snakes, attending graduations, playing darts and collecting stamps. Mark perfectly captures the humour and depth of this role, as Grandpa provides the play's emotional centre and delivers a title line that has become part of our everyday speech.

Meet Eleanor Robins as Alice Sycamore, our absolute darling heroine whose world is turned around when she falls in love with young Tony Kirby. El captures both Alice's affection for her family and her occasional frustration and pain on their account, engaging us with the humour in her situation and keeping us well invested in the play's inevitable happy outcome.

Meet Henry Stuckey as Tony Kirby - Alice Sycamore's love interest and the son of her boss. Henry is charming as our young man in love, a little shy but infatuated by Alice and delighted by her family's warmth and sense of fun, which may just inspire him to change his own life for the better.

Meet Bron Williams as Penny Sycamore, the eccentric play writing, portrait painting mother of Alice who is wildly enthusiastic about her daughter's budding romance with "the boss's son" Tony Kirby. Bron is relishing the opportunity to channel this fabulous, well scripted comic character.

Meet Scott Stuckey as Paul Sycamore, father to Alice and son-in-law to Martin (Grandpa) Vanderhof who reads Trotsky and creates ambitious firework displays in the cellar with his friend Mr de Pinna. Scott gives a finely tuned performance full of warmth and a wry wit.
