ARTWORK FOCUS
RAY JAMES TJANGALA | YUNALA

In his signature bold, minimalist geometrical linework, Ray James Tjangala depicts designs associated with Yunala, a significant site and tjukurrpa (ancestral stories) connected to a rockhole site located west of the Kiwirkurra in the tali (sandhill) Country of the Gibson Desert.

Ancestral stories tell that a group of Tingari Men camped at Yunala, gathering the tubers of the native flora, which shares the Yunala name, ahead of their travels east to Pinari, north of Lake Makcay. Along their travels the Tingari performed rituals and created particular sites, with these events becoming enshrined in a number of song cycles which form part of the teaching of post initiatory youths today. As the events associated with the Tingari Cycle are of a secret nature, no further detail is given.

ARTWORK FOCUS
ADRIAN JURRA TJUNGURRAYI | YUNALA

Adrian Jurra Tjungurrayi paints Yunala, a significant site and tjukurrpa (ancestral stories) connected to a rockhole site located west of the Kiwirkurra in the tali (sandhill) Country of the Gibson Desert.

Recalled from his mind’s eye, Adrian Jurra paints Yunala in experimental geometric tessellating forms and refined, subtle tonal shifts that vividly conjure the shimmering salt lakes that characterise this Country. Upon the canvas, sinuous lines oscillate on with visceral energy, tracing the interlaced root systems of the native flora that share the Yunala name, and whose tubers can be identified by detecting similar patterning in the sand. The artist’s signature finger-like patterns depict the distinctive spiralling stem at the top of the plant.
