Touka Shoukor co-wrote Love Without Remorse with Celine Khoury. It will be performed as a rehearsed reading on Saturday at Cracked Actors Theatre - CAT where it is undergoing dramaturgy and development with Cracked Actors & The Thespian Theatre Company (bookings at https://www.trybooking.com/CCFPG).Here is what Touka had to say about her journey to becoming a playwright;

"My name is Touka Shoukor, I’m a 27-year-old Iraqi-Australian, Muslim woman living in Melbourne. I was born in Iraq but left when I was 2 years old, I unwillingly left Iraq with my older sister and my parents. We travelled to Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, living our lives out of suitcases, a young refugee family trying to find peace and happiness. In 2001, we were lucky enough to be granted a humanitarian visa to come to Australia, I was 8 years old when I started my new Australian life.

The majority of my life in Australia has been riddled with questions of belonging and identity. As a young woman who lived life with two language, two contrasting cultures and a refugee status, I always felt like I was living two lives. For the most part of my life, always thought that I had to keep those two cultures separate, that they could never share a healthy space in my life, I thought that at some stage I would have to choose one over the other. It wasn’t until my late 20s that I finally understood that I had to become the bridge that connected both elements of my life and that both cultures deserved a respected place in my life, because the existence of one and the elimination of the other means the loss of my identity.

I’m currently working as an English and EAL teacher at Roxburgh College I also taught at Craigieburn Secondary College. This is my fifth year as a teacher. Craigieburn and Roxburgh Park are neighbouring suburbs, hence both areas harbour similar communities. Most of the students I teach at Roxburgh College come from a Middle Eastern background. Those students also either have migrant parents or are migrants themselves. Most of what the students experience in life I would have most likely already experienced, hence the majority of our conversations revolve around the issues of identity and culture, were both young boys and girls discuss their struggles in finding themselves and also proving themselves from a young age. Yet, no matter how many times I have those conversations, the answer is never easy to find, no matter how long I’ve been content in my life. Identity is personal, I wrote a whole thesis on it for my Masters Degree in Teaching. It’s not an easy question to answer, and it’s unique to every person on earth, yet the struggle in finding ones true self is what the connects most people. While I have never undertaken media classes, I have always loved and been interested in film and television, I think I get that from my dad (Majid Shokor). From an early age I knew that writing needed to be a part of my life, it’s been my outlet in understanding who I am and the world around me. In the last couple of years, I challenged myself to begin writing scripts. I have written a short film, which received positive feedback from other creatives who have read it and I have just finished writing a first draft of a six-episode TV show. I am looking forward to continuing writing scripts and telling honest stories, representative of the world around me".

We're delighted to welcome you to Cracked Actors Theatre Touka! See you at the CAT this weekend!
