Ellen is born in Louisiana on January 26, 1958.

As a child, she discovers the work of Dian Fossey, the American scientist who spent years living among the mountain gorillas of Rwanda.

Fossey shows the world that these huge animals are gentle, intelligent, and deeply devoted to their families.

Ellen is captivated. Fossey becomes her hero, and seeing the gorillas in person becomes a dream.

Fossey dies in 1985, but her work continues through the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.

Ellen becomes one of the most famous talk show hosts in the world. She meets presidents, movie stars, and legends.

But Portia notices something early in their relationship. Of all the remarkable people Ellen has met, the person who influenced her most is someone she never got to meet: Dian Fossey.

Ellen has often said that Fossey is the person she would most like to interview.

In January 2018, Ellen turns 60. Portia appears on the show with a surprise.

She says the gift had to represent who Ellen really is and what she has always cared about.

A video plays. Over footage of gorillas in the mountains of Rwanda, Portia announces that she is bringing Ellen and her hero together.

She will help build a permanent home for the Fossey Fund's scientists: the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.

Ellen is moved to tears. She calls it the best gift anyone could have given her.

Building it is a huge challenge. Over the next four years, the project faces the pandemic, a volcanic eruption, and earthquakes.

On February 1, 2022, the campus opens to visitors.

It sits just outside Volcanoes National Park, where the mountain gorillas live. Its 15 acres hold research labs, eco-friendly housing for students and scientists, and hundreds of thousands of native plants.

Ellen says seeing her name next to Dian Fossey's is such an honor.

Here's the part most people don't know. In its first months, the campus welcomes about 5,000 visitors, and about two out of every five are Rwandan students learning about the wildlife in their own country.

That May, after 19 seasons, the final episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show airs.

In June 2022, Ellen and Portia travel to Rwanda for the grand opening.

The mountain gorillas, once feared close to disappearing, have been slowly increasing in number thanks to decades of protection.

Ellen says she has even thought about moving to Rwanda, because the people there are so welcoming.

The heroes who inspire us as children can shape our lives for decades. Sometimes the best way to honor them is to carry their work forward, so that the next generation can be inspired too.

She is born Destiny Hope Cyrus in Nashville on November 23, 1992. Her family calls her Smiley, which soon becomes Miley.

Her father is country singer Billy Ray Cyrus. She grows up dreaming of stages.

In 2004, while she is in middle school, a talent agent tells her about a new Disney Channel show. It is about a regular schoolgirl who secretly lives a double life as a pop star.

She records an audition tape singing Joan Jett's I Love Rock 'n Roll and sends it in.

She tries out for the best friend role. Instead, the producers ask her to read for the lead.

She sends another tape and flies to Hollywood to audition in person.

Then the call comes. Her mother is told that Miley is great, but just too small and too young for the part.

The show moves ahead without her.

A year or more goes by. She later says she forgot all about it.

Then, in late 2005, Disney calls again. They want her to come back to Los Angeles and try out one more time.

She goes, determined to prove she has grown up. She later laughs that she had braces on the only six teeth she had.

This time, the producers say yes.

Here's a detail most fans don't know. The lead character was originally named Chloe. According to her father, once the writers heard him call his daughter Miley, the character's name was changed to match hers.

On March 24, 2006, Hannah Montana premieres. She is 13.

The show becomes a massive hit and runs for four seasons. Millions of kids around the world grow up singing her songs.

She keeps growing too, as an artist with her own voice.

But one honor eludes her for years. Album after album, the Grammys pass her by.

On February 4, 2024, at 31, she finally wins her first Grammy for her song Flowers. Later that night, she wins a second, for Record of the Year.

On stage, she says the award is amazing, but she hopes it doesn't change anything, because her life was beautiful yesterday.

Six months later, Disney names her a Disney Legend. She is the youngest person ever to receive the honor.

In her speech, she says that legends get scared too, and that it's legendary to be afraid and do it anyway.

She dedicates the award to Hannah and all of her loyal fans.

Being told "not yet" isn't the same as being told "never." Sometimes the door that closes when we're young opens again when we're ready, and the best thing we can do is keep growing until it does.

Oprah is born in rural Mississippi on January 29, 1954. Her early childhood is difficult, and she moves between relatives in different cities.

As a young girl, she goes to live with her father in Nashville, Tennessee. She enrolls at Wharton Elementary School.

There, she walks into the fourth-grade classroom of Mrs. Duncan.

That first day, she runs home bursting with excitement. She tells her father she has the best teacher anybody could ever have.

Mrs. Duncan notices something in this bright, eager girl. Oprah is a gifted reader who impresses her classmates and never talks out of turn.

Oprah later says that it was in that classroom that she really came into herself.

The connection is so strong that, for a while, she wants to become a fourth-grade teacher herself.

Instead, she grows up to be one of the most famous broadcasters in the world.

She never forgets the woman who first made her feel special.

On February 1, 1989, The Oprah Winfrey Show airs an episode about teachers who changed lives. Oprah's own favorite teacher is first on the list.

Mrs. Duncan walks onto the stage. The two hold each other and cry.

Here's the sweet surprise. During the show, Oprah learns something she never knew in all those years. Mrs. Duncan's first name is Mary.

Oprah asks whether she was her teacher's favorite student that year.

Mrs. Duncan answers that of course she was, but she couldn't let anybody know. She says Oprah is a student she could never forget.

Oprah thanks her for doing exactly what teachers are supposed to do: lighting a spark for learning that lasts a lifetime. She says that spark is why she has a talk show today.

The friendship doesn't end when the cameras stop.

In 2007, Mrs. Duncan comes back to visit her famous former student behind the scenes.

In May 2011, after 25 seasons, Oprah tapes the final episode of her show. Sitting in the audience among her closest friends and family is Mary Duncan.

Years later, Oprah reflects on what made the difference for her as a child. She points to Mrs. Duncan, who she says made her believe that she mattered.

She calls that feeling what every human being is looking for.

One caring adult can change the direction of a child's life. If someone once believed in you, it might be time to say thank you. And if there's a young person in your life today, you might be the one they remember forever.

He is born Justin Randall Timberlake in Memphis on January 31, 1981. He grows up in the small town of Millington, just outside the city.

Music runs in the family. His father leads a church choir, and his grandfather introduces him to Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.

By 11, he is singing country and gospel songs wherever he can.

Then comes his big chance. He is booked on Star Search, the biggest talent show on national television.

Host Ed McMahon welcomes him as Justin Randall from Millington, Tennessee. He steps out in a cowboy look and sings his heart out.

The judges give him three and a quarter stars.

It isn't enough. He loses in the first round to a young singer named Anna Nardona.

Here's a detail that makes this story even better. Nardona has no idea she beat the future pop star until years later, when VH1 calls her for a special about the show.

For a kid who just lost on national TV, it feels like the end of something.

But shortly afterward, he hears about an open casting call for a new version of Disney's Mickey Mouse Club.

He auditions and is chosen.

His fellow cast members include Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Ryan Gosling, and JC Chasez, his future bandmate.

He later says that if he had won even one round on Star Search, he never would have seen that audition. He calls it funny how things work out.

After about two years, the show is canceled. He is 14, and the spotlight disappears as quickly as it came.

Then the phone rings. A singer named Chris Kirkpatrick is putting together a new vocal group, and he wants Timberlake in it.

The group becomes NSYNC. In 1998, their first album comes out in the United States and goes on to sell 11 million copies.

Between rehearsals and shows, the teenage Timberlake keeps up with his schoolwork alongside a tutor.

He later launches a solo career and wins 10 Grammy Awards.

In 2017, his song Can't Stop the Feeling! earns him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.

He also wins Emmy Awards for his comedy work on Saturday Night Live.

The kid who lost in round one becomes one of the biggest entertainers of his generation.

Sometimes, losing is what gets us through the right door. The "no" that hurts today may be the very thing that lets us see the opportunity we were meant to find.

She is born Katheryn Hudson on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California. Her parents are both pastors.

At home, pop music isn't allowed. She grows up singing gospel songs in church.

As a teenager, she takes voice lessons and catches the attention of two Christian rock musicians. They bring her to Nashville, where she learns to play guitar and write her own songs.

A small Christian label, Red Hill Records, signs her.

On March 6, 2001, her debut album, Katy Hudson, is released. She is 16.

Critics are kind. Christianity Today even names it one of the best albums of the year.

But the label is in deep financial trouble and can barely promote it. The album sells only 100 to 200 copies.

By the end of 2001, Red Hill Records has folded.

At 17, she moves to Los Angeles to start over. She takes her mother's maiden name and becomes Katy Perry.

In 2004, she signs with a label connected to the Island Def Jam group. She starts recording a new album, but the project is shelved when that label loses its deal.

Then Columbia Records signs her.

She records an entire album. In 2006, just as it is nearly finished, Columbia drops her too.

She is 21, has been signed three times, and has almost nothing to show for it.

Here's the part most fans don't know. One person at Columbia still believes in her. Angelica Cob-Baehler, a publicity executive at the label, carries Perry's demos to Capitol Records.

In 2007, Capitol signs her.

In June 2008, her album One of the Boys comes out. Her first single shoots to number one, and suddenly the whole world knows her name.

Two years later comes Teenage Dream.

In August 2011, it makes history. She becomes the first woman ever to score five number one singles in the United States from a single album.

Only Michael Jackson had done it before, with Bad.

The girl whose first album sold a couple hundred copies goes on to sell more than 143 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Being turned away again and again doesn't mean your talent isn't real. Sometimes it takes one person who believes in you to carry your work to the right door, and sometimes the next "no" is just one step before the "yes."

His name is Marshall Mathers. He grows up poor, moving back and forth between Missouri and Detroit.

He finds his voice in rap, at open mics and battles around Detroit. Again and again, he is told he doesn't belong.

By 1997, he has already released one independent album. It barely sells.

He keeps writing anyway. That spring, he records an eight-song EP and introduces a new, darker alter ego: Slim Shady.

Money is gone. Home is gone.

He travels to Los Angeles for the Rap Olympics, a national freestyle battle competition. He badly needs the prize.

He battles his way through round after round. In the end, he comes in second.

He is crushed. On the surface, the trip looks like a failure.

But not everyone in the crowd is just a fan.

Here's the part most people never hear about. An intern from Interscope Records named Dean Geistlinger is watching. He is impressed and asks Eminem for a copy of the Slim Shady EP.

The tape makes its way to Jimmy Iovine, the head of Interscope.

Iovine plays it for Dr. Dre, one of the most respected producers in hip-hop.

Dre later says that in all his years in the business, he had never found an artist from a demo tape before. He tells Iovine to find him.

They track Eminem down and start working together. Eminem is nervous at first, sitting in the studio with one of his heroes.

On February 23, 1999, The Slim Shady LP is released. By the end of the year, it has gone triple platinum.

The young man who lost the Rap Olympics is suddenly one of the biggest names in music.

He doesn't stop there. In 2002, he stars in 8 Mile, a film inspired by his years battling in Detroit.

On March 23, 2003, his song Lose Yourself wins the Academy Award for Best Original Song. It is the first hip-hop song ever to win an Oscar.

He isn't even at the ceremony.

Seventeen years later, at the 2020 Oscars, he walks out unannounced and performs it live. The audience leaps to its feet.

All of it began in a room where he didn't win.

You can do everything right and still come in second. But you never know who is watching, or how one small request might open a door. Keep showing up and giving your best, even when it looks like you've lost.

She is born Stefani Germanotta in New York City on March 28, 1986.

Music comes early. By 14, she is performing at open mic nights in clubs and bars around Manhattan.

At 17, she earns early admission to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Before long, she makes a risky choice.

At 19, she withdraws from school and moves out of her parents' home to chase music full-time.

In 2006, Def Jam Recordings signs her. It feels like the break she has been working for.

Three months later, the label drops her.

She doesn't go home. She plays the rough little clubs of the Lower East Side, building a wild stage show and sharpening her songs night after night.

She also takes a quieter job. She writes songs for other artists under a publishing deal.

Here is the twist most fans don't know. One day, she sings a guide track in the studio, a rough vocal meant to show another singer how a song should sound.

Akon hears it. He realizes the songwriter in the booth has a voice of her own.

He pushes the head of Interscope Records to sign her, and he brings her onto his own label as well.

On August 19, 2008, her first album, The Fame, comes out. Its first single, Just Dance, becomes a number one hit around the world.

The girl who was dropped after three months is suddenly everywhere.

Success doesn't make the road smooth. In 2017, she is set to headline the Rock in Rio festival in Brazil. At the last minute, she cancels because of severe physical pain, and later reveals she was in the hospital.

Brazilian fans are heartbroken. Years pass.

On May 3, 2025, at age 39, she finally returns. Rio's city government puts on a free concert for her on Copacabana Beach.

Officials expect about 1.6 million people.

Organizers later estimate that 2.1 million show up, about half a million more than the crowd Madonna drew on the same beach a year earlier.

It is the biggest show of her career, and her first concert in Brazil since 2012.

From the stage, she tells the crowd that they waited more than 10 years for her, and that she was getting stronger.

Then she gives them everything she has.

Being turned away is not the end of the story. Sometimes it is the first chapter. Keep doing the work, even in small rooms, because the right person may be listening when you least expect it.

She is born in Houston on September 4, 1981. At home, she is a quiet child.

In 1989, a dance teacher hears her sing and enters her in a school talent show. Her parents, sitting in the audience, can hardly believe the confident girl on stage is their shy daughter.

She wins. Then she keeps winning local contests.

Soon she is the lead singer of a kids' group called Girls Tyme. Among the girls is Kelly Rowland, who will stand beside her for years to come.

They rehearse wherever they can, including at her mother's hair salon. Customers become their first audience.

In 1992, Girls Tyme reaches the finals of Star Search, hosted by Ed McMahon. By now the group has seven members.

The girls are certain that a win will lead to a record deal.

They lose.

The defeat hits them hard. But instead of quitting, they treat it as a lesson.

They rehearse harder. The group gets smaller and sharper. Her father eventually leaves his sales job at Xerox to manage them full-time.

The group is renamed Destiny's Child. In 2001, they win their first Grammy Awards.

Beyoncé goes on to build a solo career, album by album, tour by tour.

In February 2023, she breaks the record for the most Grammy wins of any artist, passing conductor Georg Solti's long-standing total of 31.

On February 2, 2025, she wins Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter. It is her fifth time nominated for the award, and her first win.

Her total stands at 35 Grammys from 99 nominations. No artist has more of either.

Here's the detail many fans miss. In 2013, Beyoncé opens her song Flawless with a recording of Ed McMahon introducing Girls Tyme on Star Search.

She doesn't hide the loss. She puts it front and center, more than 20 years later, on one of the biggest albums of her career.

The moment that once felt like the end has become part of her story.

Losing on a big stage can feel final, especially when you're young. But a "no" is often just the start. The people who go furthest are often those who learned early how to fall short, get back up, and keep working.

She is born on June 9, 1981, in Jerusalem. Her family moves to the United States when she is a small child and eventually settles on Long Island, New York.

Her father is a doctor. Learning comes first in her home.

In 1994, at age 12, she makes her film debut in Léon: The Professional. Critics notice her right away.

Most child stars would chase the next big role. She keeps going to a regular public school, Syosset High School, and stays a straight-A student.

Here's the part most fans have never heard. As a teenager, she works with scientist Jonathan Woodward of Oak Ridge National Laboratory on a research project.

Together they show a simple way to turn ordinary sugar into hydrogen fuel using two enzymes. A dye turns purple to show the hydrogen being made, so no expensive lab equipment is needed.

The 1998 paper, published under the name Natalie Hershlag, makes her a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search, one of the most competitive science contests for high school students in America.

That same year, she makes her Broadway debut in The Diary of Anne Frank.

Then comes Star Wars. She plays Queen Padmé Amidala in The Phantom Menace, which earns about $924 million worldwide.

When the premiere arrives, she stays home with her textbooks.

She tells one interviewer that she would rather be smart than a movie star.

In the fall of 1999, she starts at Harvard University to study psychology. She keeps acting, but carefully, filming her Star Wars scenes around her classes and breaks.

At Harvard, she works as a research assistant in a neuroscience lab. The team studies when babies begin to understand that hidden objects still exist.

Babies won't hold still in a brain scanner. So the researchers shine harmless light into infants' foreheads to track blood flow in the brain.

They find that a part of the brain at the front lights up as babies develop this skill. In 2002, the study is published in the journal NeuroImage, again under the name Natalie Hershlag.

On June 5, 2003, she graduates with a bachelor's degree in psychology.

Her career doesn't suffer for it. On February 27, 2011, she wins the Academy Award for Best Actress for Black Swan.

She is a published scientist, a Harvard graduate, and an Oscar winner, and she is still in her twenties when she achieves all three.

Fame can make it tempting to give up everything else. Portman shows that you can say no to the spotlight for a while, put your own growth first, and still build the life you dreamed of.

The woman is Heloisa Vinhas. She is 22, and the driver who hit her is already gone.

Cruise stops and calls for help on his cell phone. He stays with her until the ambulance arrives, then follows her to UCLA Medical Center.

She is in so much pain that she doesn't recognize him.

At the hospital, he learns she has torn ligaments in her knee and no health insurance. He pays her bill himself.

She later tells People magazine that if he isn't Superman, he can be Batman.

Five months later, he is far from Hollywood.

It is August 1996. Cruise, 34, and his wife, Nicole Kidman, are on a week-long vacation off the Italian island of Capri. They are on a chartered 247-foot yacht with their two young children and a few friends.

Over breakfast, they spot a sailboat burning nearby. Five people are bobbing in a rubber raft beside it.

Cruise sends his yacht's skiff straight over. All five are brought safely aboard.

His publicist says he did what any decent person would do.

That same summer, at the London premiere of Mission: Impossible, a crowd surges toward the barriers.

Two boys are caught in the crush. Laurence Sadler is 7 and only 4 feet 1 inch tall. A steel bar is pressing against him just under his chin. Christos Tzanetis, 13, is pinned beside him.

Cruise sees it happen. He lifts both boys out of the crowd to safety.

One of the mothers later says the evening could have ended in tragedy, and that her family is very grateful.

The kindness doesn't always look dramatic.

On December 15, 2004, he walks into a small Dairy Queen in Lexington, Virginia, near closing time. He is in town filming War of the Worlds.

On the counter sits a donation jar with a photo of 11-year-old Ashley Flint. A go-kart accident that September nearly took her life, and her single mother is struggling with the medical bills.

He orders a Blizzard, then asks if he can help. He fills the jar with $5,000 in hundred-dollar bills.

None of these moments came with cameras or a script. Each one began with someone noticing a stranger in trouble and deciding not to look away.

Most of us will never face a burning boat. But nearly every day, someone near us needs a hand, a phone call, or just someone who stops. Being the person who stops is a choice anyone can make.
