We were lucky enough to see the final performance of play OSHUN today at the It was such a thought provoking work, funny and endearing. And she is such a captivating performer. Amarantha is one of the mentorship recipients of our inaugural FLUXUS Opera Lab and we can’t wait to see how her writing transfers to the operatic space. We are going to work with an existing work of hers ‘River Mumma and The Golden Table’. And we are currently on the look out for a composer with experience in both classical and African-diasporic music. Watch this space…

We’re pleased to announce the recipients of the FLUXUS Opera Lab - Space to Create $5,000 development grants.

In this, our inaugural year, we received an overwhelming number of submissions from artists across the country - so many that we have increased our support from 2 to 3 grants. A clear indication of the appetite for new work and a strong sign of what’s to come for opera in Australia.

These three projects reflect the range of voices and approaches shaping new opera right now:

Alice Chance (composer) - Great Big Tree
An award-winning composer known for her inventive and accessible work across choral and music theatre forms, Alice brings a distinctive musical language and a strong sense of storytelling to this new work for younger audiences.

Teddy Dunn (writer) & Alex Turley (composer) - Suits
A collaboration between two highly experienced artists, Suits builds on an existing body of work to explore identity, voice and form through a staged song cycle that sits between opera and contemporary music theatre.

Daniel Szesiong Todd (writer) - Chinese Medea
A bold reimagining of a classic narrative, this project brings together an experienced creative team to explore myth, culture and contemporary perspective through a new operatic lens.

All three artist will recieve curated mentorship and support as they take their projects to the next stage of developement. We will be sharing more about each of these creatives and their projects in the coming months.

We’ll also be announcing the recipients of our mentorship program in the coming days.

Went to a double bill presented by last night. Irish uncle/niece composer/playwright duo Emma and Mark O’Halloran’s - ‘Mary Motorhead’ & ‘Trade’. Extraordinary performances by (so powerful and nuanced) and .hillier (honestly never seen him so good. This is some of the best acting I’ve seen this year) and newcomer .mcging.tenor (whose physicality perfectly captured this awkward, young man ). All the singing AND DICTION was exceptional. (see - you don’t need subtitles when the acting, diction and writing for voice is this good). Beautiful, nuanced and actor-led direction by .nda_thom.pson and exquisite musical direction of this Grammy winning score (the electronics! The sampling! The lyricism!😍) from Honestly. We were blown away. There are $40 student rush tickets up for grabs. $50 under 30s And other tickets are relatively very affordable. Only a few more opportunities at this week. A must-see.
