If you love strings with voices, you will love Out of the Deep. Out of the Deep is an immersive work for a ca****la choir and solo cello (and a little bit of violin), exploring descent, transition and transcendence through music, space and movement. Across the multiple levels of the Gaol, Alchemy voices and Josh Dema on cello surround the audience from above and below, with a program moving from Gregorian chant and Bach to contemporary works by composers including John Rutter, William Barton and Sophie Webber.⁠

We are so excited to be singing The Sun Never Says by Dan Forrest once again. This piece has a special place in our heart after we performed it at the NGV Triennial in 2024. Our performance was described as "a transcendent dialogue extending beyond the intimate ensemble of vocalists, conductor and cellist." This piece is a new addition to Out Of The Deep, but it's just so magical that we couldn't leave it out. Swipe to hear a little snippet from rehearsals.⁠

Alchemy has sung at the Old Melbourne Gaol before and it has one of the most resonant acoustics in Melbourne. It is strange and interesting to think what this space would have sounded like in the past. In Out of the Deep, Alchemy uses the architecture of the Gaol to surround the audience with music from every angle.⁠
