As I’m sure most of you already know, Meeniyan Art Gallery is a volunteer led space celebrating the best art South Gippsland has to offer. Our volunteers are the backbone of this special place, so for the month of June we are hosting a volunteer group show! Each day, until the end of this month, I will be introducing one of our amazing volunteers.
Today I will begin by introducing Melinda! Melinda is part of our hanging team, helping to curate and display the exhibitions showcased at MAG. Melinda is also a talented mixed media artist who enjoys exploring her intimate and ever changing connection to the Australian landscape.
When I asked her how the landscape inspires her art practise, she had this to say: “I love bleak and rugged landscapes that have been shaped by geological influences (eg. glaciers and erosion). I particularly love the bleakness of the moorland and peatland, as well as sites that have been excavated and changed through man made processes.” She is not interested in representing literal landscapes, but the emotions they evoke. Melinda explained that her art focuses on the smaller details of the landscape, at the “shapes and marks rather than the land as a whole”.
Melinda has been kind enough to share some BTS photos of her practise, both in nature and in the studio.
