Here are some highlights from the review!

His soulful and powerful writing mixed with his incredibly talented physicality and verbal techniques to create characters that were starkly different to each other but were connected by a common string of theme was enriching and strikingly compelling.

The writing style of this show is outstanding.

His use of accents and physicality to explore the contrasts of these people was outstanding, and his kiwi accent was in all honesty, perfection. 

Bobbie-Jean Henning’s direction truly allowed the show to flourish to its full potential. To engage an audience with a monologue and occupy a small space non stop for over an hour is incredibly difficult, but Bobbie-Jean Henning did it with complete ease.

Brendan de la Hay’s production design enhanced the space beautifully, adding such visual depth and symbolism to the narrative's message.

Frankie Clarke’s lighting design was gorgeous, and enriched the stage beautifully, allowing the full potential of the episodic style to thrive. 

Sound design by Johnny Yang was gorgeous too, it's perfect succinctness to Challito Browne’s movements was a highlight to me.

The production features of this show were truly a standout in this production, all working unanimously together to pack a full show of brilliance. 

This show deserves to be shown on stages around Australia, and has huge amounts of potential to be an extremely important piece of Contemporary Australian Theatre. If you are in the Sydney area during the next few days, this is a piece of theatre you genuinely do not want to miss.

Challito Browne‘s Beyond the Break has restored my faith in how beautiful, impactful and considerate this genre of theatre can be.

When I think about the craft of the work itself, the word that comes to mind is precision.

Brendan de la Hay’s beautiful production design elevated the work and its themes without encumbering Challito’s performance.

Frankie Clarke's Lighting Design danced and mirrored (pun intented) around the script and emotions of the piece perfectly.

Direction from Bobbie-Jean Henning brought all the elements of the experience together to ensure a work with heavy topics, power and emotionality didn’t lose itself to the many potentials the genre could take. Nothing was too much or too little, it was precise.

Long story short, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Its comedic pacing, character work, poetry, authenticity, and emotionality, were all done with care and precision. I do recommend checking it out before it closes on Sunday 29th October.

Writer / performer Challitos Browne's new play Beyond the Break asks the question, what does it mean to be Australian? A question that a lot of us seem to be asking now more than ever.

After the loss of a loved one the orator finds himself trapped in a memory. As he battles through his grief he is torn between worlds and thrown back to other painful experiences from his youth. The story puts a spotlight on racism and how its residue leaves a lasting mark on person and culture.

This indie show is playing Downstairs Belvoir this October for a very limited season! Don't miss out!
