What a beautiful Winter’s day we had on Sunday for our final Winter Occasion with the wonderfully talented Sue Codee from Sue Codee

Under blue skies and glorious winter sunshine, we gathered around the table to create tiny worlds inside humble sardine tins — and oh, the creativity! Each little diorama was completely unique, imaginative and full of personality.

There was plenty of cutting, layering, storytelling and creative play, accompanied by delicious seasonal food, good conversation and lots of laughter.

A huge thank you to Sue for sharing her incredible paper-cutting skills, generosity and creative magic with us. And to our wonderful participants — thank you for bringing your ideas, enthusiasm and imagination to the table.

WORKSHOP INFO
Discover the magic of storytelling in miniature as you transform a humble recycled sardine tin into a unique three-dimensional artwork. Using layers of hand-cut paper, you’ll learn how to create depth, texture and intrigue while building your own tiny scene inside the tin.

Whether inspired by a favourite memory, a whimsical landscape, nature, or an imaginary world of your own creation, this workshop invites you to slow down, play and let your creativity lead the way. Participants are encouraged to bring along small keepsakes, found objects or treasured mementos to incorporate into their designs, making each piece deeply personal and one-of-a-kind.

Guided by Sue Codee of This Papercut Life, a talented and highly respected local paper-cut artist, you’ll learn techniques for creating layered paper scenes while discovering the joy of working on a miniature scale. Sue’s intricate paper artworks are renowned for their storytelling and attention to detail, making this a wonderful opportunity to learn from one of the region’s most creative makers.

You’ll leave with a charming miniature artwork ready to display. Time permitting, participants may create additional dioramas to form a delightful collection of tiny stories captured in tins.

Slow down and discover the mindful art of embroidery in this relaxed and creative workshop inspired by the beauty of the natural world. Perfect for beginners, you’ll learn a selection of simple embroidery stitches and techniques while creating your own botanical design featuring flowers and foliage.

Under Annie’s guidance, you’ll discover how a few basic stitches can be combined to create beautiful embroidered artworks, opening the door to a whole new world of creative possibilities. As the rhythm of stitching takes over, you’ll find yourself immersed in the calming and rewarding process of working with needle and thread.

Participants will create a beautiful embroidered cover for a journal, which is included in the workshop. Whether kept as a personal keepsake or gifted to someone special, you’ll leave with a unique handmade piece inspired by the flora that surrounds us.

Annie is no stranger to The Seasonal Creative, having joined us at many workshops and events over the years as a participant herself. We are absolutely delighted to welcome her to the other side of the table as a tutor this time and know you’ll enjoy spending the day creating, stitching and sharing stories with such a warm and generous local artist.

Autumn Occasion #3 was held today with the wonderful Leaves in Watercolour workshop led by
A huge thank you to Ros for generously sharing your skills, creativity and passion with everyone. Our students truly excelled and it was such a joy to see their beautiful work come to life throughout the day.
Fuelled by a delicious morning tea and lunch, we enjoyed a fantastic day together — and despite the very ordinary forecast, the sunshine made an appearance for a perfect Albany autumn day ☀️🍁

Our Seasonal Creative Autumn Occasion #1 yesterday was nothing short of magical.

A truly fabulous day filled with smiles, laughter, and so much creativity. We are incredibly grateful to for her amazing Playing with Fire – An Introduction to Encaustics workshop. What a treat it was for everyone to learn from such a talented passionate and generous artist.

Guests enjoyed a scrumptious morning tea followed by a delicious lunch, packed with local seasonal goodness — the perfect way to nourish both body and soul.

From Clay to Cup - Handbuilt Mug Workshop with Narelle Clark

WORKSHOP INFO

In this hands-on pottery workshop, participants will create a pair of functional stoneware mugs using pinch pot and coil building techniques. You’ll make your mugs to your preferred size and shape and add handles before exploring decorative surface design techniques including various underglaze applications, paper resist and sgraffito design; carving into the clay to create unique textures and patterns.

Guided by experienced and local potter Narelle Clark | The Coastal Studio, this workshop is a wonderful opportunity to learn handbuilding skills while enjoying the tactile, playful nature of working with clay. Participants will make two unique mugs that are beautiful and functional — perfect for your morning coffee or tea.

Following the workshop, Narelle will slowly dry, fire, clear glaze and glaze fire each piece in her studio. Your finished mugs will be ready to collect within approximately 6–8 weeks. Once fired, both mugs will be fully food safe, functional and suitable for use in the microwave and dishwasher — ready to be enjoyed and treasured for years to come.

It will no doubt be a fun, slightly messy and wonderfully mindful creative day spent learning alongside our favourite local potter.

Step into the mesmerising world of encaustic painting and discover the magic of working with molten beeswax, damar resin and pigment. In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the luminous, tactile qualities of this ancient medium while learning how to layer, fuse and manipulate wax using heat and simple tools.

Through guided experimentation, you’ll create small abstract works while discovering the joy of scraping back, building texture and letting the wax respond in unexpected ways. Encaustic is a beautifully organic process — fluid, spontaneous and wonderfully unpredictable.

This is a rare and inspiring opportunity to learn directly from acclaimed Western Australian artist Carly LeCerf, whose mastery of encaustic painting brings both depth and playfulness to the medium. With Carly’s guidance, participants will gain insight into her creative process while being encouraged to experiment, trust the material and embrace the alchemy of painting with fire.

Whether you’re new to encaustic or simply curious about this captivating technique, this workshop invites you to play, explore and discover the expressive possibilities of wax.
