Vale Sam Neill

Thank you for your creative contribution. In a career spanning half a century, Sam appeared in almost 100 feature films, dozens of TV series and wrote his memoir, 'Did I Ever Tell You This?', published in 2024 by Text Publishing.

📣 Introducing... our Margaret River Readers & Writers Festival Director, Emma Gibbons!

Emma joined Arts Margaret River in April, stepping into the role during the busy lead up to the 2026 Festival. She brings more than a decade of experience delivering everything from large-scale international events to grassroots community initiatives across Europe and Australia.

“Emma shares our passion of stories and the connections and conversations they create. We’re thrilled to welcome her to our Festival team and look forward to seeing her bring her own energy, style and ideas to this much-loved event.” – Michelle Wright, General Manager, Arts Margaret River.

Originally from the UK, Emma has called Australia home since 2014, and has spent the last five years putting down roots here in Margaret River. Outside of work, she’s most at home in the ocean, surfing her favourite waves, practising yoga, or exploring the South West on horseback.

An avid reader, passionate artist and lover of storytelling in all its forms, you’ll be hearing more from her as plans for the 2027 Festival unfold.

We are already hard at work on the 2027 Margaret River Readers & Writers Festival and we can’t wait to welcome another incredible lineup of world-class authors to Margaret River next 14-16 May.

Celebrating 2026 National NAIDOC Week, here in Wooditjup Bilya (Margaret River)

Margaret River Readers & Writers Festival and Arts Margaret River home base is Nala Bardip Mia which translates to 'Our Story House'. You may know our Festival Hub as Margaret River HEART - Nala Bardip Mia

This week, we offer heartfelt acknowledgement to local Elders and Wadandi community who have cared so deeply for this kwobidak Wadandi Boodja (beautiful Wadandi country). We are continually grateful for the generosity of our Matriarchal and Patriarchal custodians of the land where we get to share and create arts here on Saltwater Country.

It is our commitment as an organisation and as contributing community members to walk gently on Country, alongside Nyoongar peoples and all those who visit the region, caring for and protecting her for generations to come.

These lands always were, and always will be Aboriginal.

"Festival week itself crept up on us. Despite initial preparation, the final days before an event shine a light into all the cracks and crannies that have yet to be finalised. Tasks become more urgent and more important, while questions are met with more decisiveness as a true deadline looms. We started talking timings, rosters, and setting stages. But it was only when the first authors and presenters began rolling into town that it began feeling real. Friday, and the festival’s opening events, were looming."

The wonderful Liv Hartwig reflects on her Margaret River Readers & Writers experience.

We were lucky enough to host her as part of her Regional Arts WA Next Level Arts Worker Fellowship, a program designed to ignite the careers of young regional arts professionals and build the next generation of creative leaders.

Together with our dynamo volunteers, Liv was central to the success of this year's festival.
