Let's Write a Bluegrass Song Workshop.
Boyup Brook based singer songwriter John Matthews is a talented multi-instrumentalist.
John’s melodic style of banjo picking and was honed during the“ Bush Band Dance craze of the ’80s. John is unique in his musical ability to improvise and accompany others in the acoustic music scene with performance experience in the Colonial, Celtic (Irish) and Bluegrass and Old Timey song and tunes. John often performs with Green Herring of Greenbushes .

John will offer a framework for an engaging, community-driven song writing workshop.
Linking the structural elements of bluegrass—a genre famous for its dramatic, fast-paced "train wreck" disaster ballads (like the Wreck of the Old 97)—with the historical tragedy of the Mornington-Wokalup Jubilee Train Disaster providing a raw emotional stake that will naturally fuel the audience's creativity.
Let's Write a Bluegrass Song (LWABGSS) workshop into four actionable phases.
Phase 1: The Bluegrass Engine
I will Introduce the genre through active listening. Show the audience that bluegrass storytelling relies on simple tools that anyone can use.
Phase 2: Unearthing the Wokalup History
Anchor the workshop in the rich, tragic history of the South West. Present the key facts of the 6 November 1920 crash as lyrical building blocks.
Phase 3: The Collaborative Brainstorm
Facilitate the transition from history to a collaborative creation, to turn the facts into sensory descriptions and rhythm.
Phase 4: Writing & Performing the Chorus
The audience's ideas will form a final, singable piece, allowing everyone the immediate satisfaction of seeing a song manifest in real-time.

Your weekend ticket gives you fulll access to 3 concerts, workshops and unllimited jamming!

Do you love the driving rhythm of a clawhammer banjo? Got a banjo in the cupboard just gathering dust?
This workshop could be for you!

Introducing Leana Downs, Clawhammer Banjo Workshop

Leana is originally from the US, and first learned to play old-time clawhammer banjo nearly 30 years ago in the Adirondack Mountains of New York state.

She has a true love for the rhythm-heavy Ithaca-style of old time music. While she does not consider herself a musician in terms of music theory, she worked at learning banjo one tune at a time and one note at a time - spending countless jam sessions muting strings and simply practicing right-hand rhythm. She remembers what it is like to learn without a natural ability, and teaches accordingly.

The clawhammer banjo workshops will be pitched at a beginner level, emphasizing strong right hand rhythms/technique over left hand melody. There will be an intent of a cumulative progression of learning about old time music in general, old-time specific jam culture and etiquette, rhythm basics, and then a tune (or tunes) broken down note-by-note, over the course of the weekend. The pace of the workshops will be tailored to the attendees present.

She will aim to select festival-type tunes that can be played with the basic clawhammer rhythm for pure beginners, yet also have some nice potential for intermediate rhythmic variations.

Clawhammer can be taught on any type of 5-string banjo, just bring whatever banjo you have - but having that 5th string is a requirement for the old time clawhammer style. She'll also have a spare banjo on hand if anyone would like to participate but doesn't have a banjo yet. It would be best to let us know ahead of time if you'd like to borrow the banjo for the workshop to ensure availability.

Introducing the first of our Feature Artists, The Gumtree Boys.

Gumtree Boys are a bluegrass band based in Perth, Western Australia. The band came together through Tom's Community Bluegrass Jams, where a shared love of bluegrass music turned regular jam sessions into a band.

Ken, Nathan and Chris all come from different walks of life, but quickly realised they liked the same bands, songs and tunes. After plenty of nights picking together, playing gigs was the natural next step.

We're still learning, still swapping tunes and, most importantly, still having fun every time we get together. If we're not enjoying the music ourselves, we're doing it wrong.

With guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and vocals, Gumtree Boys play traditional bluegrass, gospel and old-time favourites, along with a few newer songs that fit the bluegrass style. Our biggest influences are bluegrass classics and newer artists like Billy Strings.

For us, bluegrass is about good people as much as good music. We want every jam and every show to be welcoming, relaxed and fun, where people can make friends, learn something new and enjoy the music together. We hope to do our part in helping bluegrass continue to grow in Western Australia.
