Final days to catch Kunkurra | The spiralling wind

Ivan Namirrkki, Obed Namirrkki, Kenan Namunjdja and Deborah Yulidjirri, four Kardbam artists whose bark paintings and hollow logs tell the story of Kunkurra, a supernatural force tied to Country, ceremony and living cultural inheritance.

A tradition nearly five decades in the making, the rarrk cross-hatching first mastered by Peter Marralwanga now lives in the hands of his children and grandchildren. Spanning two generations, these works carry forward a lineage of deep kinship, sacred place and artistic excellence rooted in the Kardbam estate of West Arnhem Land.

Join us in Maningrida, Arnhem Land as the manager of Babbarra Women’s Centre and its exciting textile brand, Babbarra Designs.
This is a job for an arts professional who is ready for the next challenge of living in an Aboriginal Community and leading a First Nations led Women’s art centre. The manager role is creative and hands on, working on site with a growing team of arts workers and artists.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are encouraged to apply.

In Sabbia’s fourth iteration of our First Nation’s biannual group exhibition, we are looking towards artists that are change-makers – those working with new materials or new ways of representing strong culture in their chosen material. These are artists that have inspired other creatives in their communities, keeping a strong heritage for the next generation.

Maningrida artists included in this stunning installation are Maureen Ali, Dorothy Bunibuni, Vera Cameron and Lena Yarinkura.

For those enjoying summer in Melbourne, be sure to check out the Rigg Design Prize: Next in Design. Located on level 3 at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Fed Square and closing February 1st.

Featuring these exquisite Lorrkkon by Simone Namunjdja. Using a striking palette of black and white, much like her relation artist Susan Marawarr, Simone paints djang that have been passed down through her family line.
