What happens after the fire?

For artist Lucy Gray, the banksia offers a powerful answer. Some banksias release their seeds in response to fire, creating the possibility for new growth.

In this soulful exhibition, Lucy explores grief, loss, suffering, resilience and hope through large scale paintings, video, linocut prints and drawings.

Serotiny invites us into a quiet space to consider the experiences we often keep private and unseen, and to reflect on the possibility of renewal and healing.

A little window onto my banksia collection and my mind 🫶🏻

Years of bushwalks, finding fallen banksia cones and dried flowers.
A collection not just of things, but of the gentle process of walking through seasons of grief. For those who know me, or are familiar with my art, you will know how much I love banksias not just for their exquisite form and rare beauty ~ but their incredible transformative ability, a process called Serotiny: a quiet powerful resilience to wait until the perfect time to open their seed follicles after the intensity of a bushfire, in order to germinate and continue their legacy.

I am pleased to let you know that the countdown has begun for my solo exhibition SEROTINY: Parables of the Banksua at Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah. Opening night Friday 11 September 6pm. All are welcome.

Oh gosh this amazing friend of mine is incredibly generous - her time, her vision to help me re-order and design my work space in my home studio - she came over yesterday to see how it all came together just in time for the Mandurah Open Studios event. Thank you Alana from Banksia Bay Design Co. You are a legend.

This weekend I had the pleasure of hosting a private workshop for these gorgeous women. My workshop Introductory Botanical Watercolours teaches the basics of watercolours, and the application of techniques to the observation of plant specimens, and includes painting an artwork to take home framed. These ladies knocked it out the park! Thank you for gathering everyone, it was a joy to spend time with you all.
