The Victorian era was notable for the rise of the middle class. Relatively affluent, they had money to spend on leisure - but also, they suspected that leisure posed a moral hazard, and therefore any leisure pursuits had to have a moral or 'improving' aspect.

At the same time, there was a desire to demonstrate social status by raising daughters with 'accomplishments', which signalled that the family was wealthy enough that the daughters could pursue impractical pursuits, such as music, painting and fine needlework.

From this, a thriving market developed in ballads, often with a moral component, which could be performed to small gatherings of family and friends to demonstrate both affluence and moral probity. Our upcoming concert includes some excellent examples of these songs, including Maybrick's "The Holy City".

There will be four performances of "Come Into The Garden Maud" at The Knowe, 4 Clarkmont Road, Sassafras:

19th March at 2pm
20th March at 2pm
26th March at 2pm
27th March at 2pm

Running time approximately 2 hours with 1 interval. The garden will be open from 12:30pm.

Visit https://gsov.org.au/come-into-the-garden-maud-2022/ to book your tickets!!

(Appropriate COVID safety measures will be in place at all GSOV performances).

"The Lost Chord" is one of Arthur Sullivan's best known works outside of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.

The poem was written by the popular Victorian poet, Adelaide Anne Proctor in 1858. Sullivan made at least one earlier attempt to set the poem, but was unsatisfied with the results.

The version you will hear at our concert was composed in 1877, while he sat with his brother Fred during his final illness. Fred Sullivan died five days after the final draft of the music was completed. Although it was not written for sale, the song became one of the biggest commercial successes in Britain and the USA.

The City of Stonnington covers part of the indigenous Boonwurrung language area. The Yarra River and Gardiners Creek approximate the boundary between the Boonwurrung and their northern neighbour, the Woiwurrung.

Both groups camped along the river and creek banks where they sourced food including plants, fish, mussels, eels and waterfowl. The Boonwurrung clan most associated with the Stonnington area is the Yalukit-willam clan, whose country encompassed all of the City of Stonnington area, with the exception of the small pocket of the city to the east of Gardiners Creek, which was Wurundjeri-balug country (a Woiwurrung clan).

The suburb of Prahran takes its name from the Aboriginal word for the area, Pur-ra-ran. According to George Langhorne, a missionary to local Aborigines in 1837, Pur-ra-ran is a compound of two words meaning 'land partially surrounded by water'. Surveyor General Robert Hoddle adopted the name Prahran for official use.

Introducing our VERY TALENTED cast for ‘Switzerland’:

Pam Christie Birkett – Patricia Highsmith

A trained singer, Pam performed with her own band for many years, and was also a grand finalist in the Australian Singing Competition (Contemporary Section). Discovering musical theatre as Fantine in Les Miserables, Pam has been a recipient of four Victorian Music Theatre Guild Awards (from nine nominations) for her roles in Shepparton’s Into the Woods (The Baker’s Wife) and CLOC’s Company (Amy), A Little Night Music (Charlotte), and Blood Brothers (Mrs Lyons), her most recent roles with CLOC being Dorothy in 42nd Street, Drowsy in The Drowsy Chaperone, and Tanya in Mamma Mia!

Pam’s first play was as Annie in Brighton’s Calendar Girls and since then she has played Helene Hanff in Peridot’s 84 Charing Cross Rd (earning a Peri Award for Best Lead Actress) and Elsie in Strangers on a Train for Malvern. She would like to assure everyone that her personality and views are polar opposites to those of Patricia’s!

Stuart Bruce – Edward Ridgeway

Stuart Bruce is an actor, writer, composer and musician with over twenty years experience across as many productions, most notably playing Hamlet on a tour of the UK, and Pink in Australia’s only production of Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

In 2019, he composed for Freak Show, an adaptation of Sophocles’ Antigone, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2020, he composed the music for DNA by Dennis Kelly, at Chapel off Chapel. In 2021, he founded Subverse Theatre and developed his first play entitled Loneliness, subsequently postponed due to COVID. He is currently writing new plays, a cabaret style one-man show, and composing for a play about Ned Kelly for the Adelaide Fringe Festival. This is Stuart’s second outing with Malvern, having played Edward VIII in Crown Matrimonial in 2020.

I absolutely loved Switzerland! That’s the way to do a psychological thriller! What a fascinating (and terrifying!) woman Patricia Highsmith must have been! Brava and Bravo to Pam Christie Birkett and Stuart Bruce for their performances. I was quite moved. The play is closing next Saturday so do hurry and get your tickets!
Malvern Theatre Company presents a new play, Switzerland by Joanna Murray-Smith at the beautifully converted church on 29 Burke Road, Malvern East from 11th to 26th February. Directed by Andrew Ferguson, the tickets are on sale now with COVID-Safe seating. 🎫 About the play: 🎭 A chilling and sometimes hilarious two-hander set in the Swiss Alps, where the ailing, reclusive crime/mystery writer, Patricia Highsmith, lives with an impressive collection of books, and a somewhat sinister collection of guns and knives. Pat’s solitude is broken when she is visited by Edward Ridgeway from her New York publisher, sent to convince her to write the final instalment of her best-selling Mr Ripley series. Edward’s stay stretches over several days and nights as Patricia struggles to start work. She insists that Edward dream-up the pivotal murder in the story. Their collaboration leads to a blurring of fiction and real-life, with a plot twist at the end of the play, which is worthy of the best of Pat’s writing. 🔗 For bookings, you can find more details on the link here: https://bit.ly/3KSYXh9 📸 Malvern Theatre Company, Stonnington City Council. #WhatsOnStonnington #MalvernEast #Melbourne #MalvernTheatreCompany #Switzerland #PerformingArts

Move over MTC - Hello Malvern Theatre Company!! Last night I had the great privilege to attend the SOLD OUT production of 'Educating Rita' at the Malvern Theatre Company. It was an incredible production of the highest quality - and right in our own backyard!! It is on 29 Burke Rd in Malvern East - so super easy to get to and to park near. I thoroughly encourage everyone to follow their page and go to one of their next productions.
