Winter Solstice Celebration

19 - 21 June

10am to 8pm daily

On the solstice, as we stand at the threshold between darkness and returning light, we invite the community to gather for a shared, immersive experience of reflection, connection, and renewal.

“The Turning” is a sensory and symbolic journey through the winter solstice, an exploration of how we move through darkness, both individually and together, and how we turn again toward light, growth, and connection.

Experience runs Friday to Sunday in the Gabo room .

The Turning is an immersive light and soundscape experienced in darkness, where shifting projections and layered audio draw you into a slow, sensory unfolding.

The Turning is a collaborative work

The Mariposa Stitch Wall Hanging
Named after the Spanish word mariposa (“butterfly”), this beautiful stitch is loved for its light, flowing structure and organic movement. One of the most appealing qualities of the Mariposa Stitch is its fluidity—rather than following a rigid pattern, it invites makers to choose their own adventure, allowing the piece to evolve naturally as they work. Each wall hanging becomes a unique expression of texture, rhythm, and creativity.

In this workshop, Sarah will guide you in using raffia—a natural fibre prized for its strength and versatility—to create a contemporary wall hanging inspired by the delicate movement of butterfly wings. Whether you follow a simple path or experiment with shape and form, the Mariposa Stitch offers endless possibilities for personal expression.

A relaxed, creative session where there are no wrong turns—just beautiful variations waiting to emerge.

We have received our first Knit Happens Solstice Blanket square! If you have some odd wool or an ugly jumper, why not repurpose it as a blanket square. Knit a 15cm x 15 cm square and bring it into the gallery on the 19th of June when we will have a special Solstice version of Crafternoon! Eat cake, have a yarn with other knitters or do some weaving with Kate. Part of our Solstice Celebration at the gallery over the weekend of 19th to 21st June. Come and connect!

TAIR 2025
The first TAIR Artist in Residence was Kim Marcovitch.
"The TAIR Residency gave me the kickstart I needed to get my own art making practice going again. I have been teaching Visual Arts for 20 years now and I have not had the opportunity to engage in my own art practice. The Mallacoota art community was supportive, kind and encouraging in helping me pursue my artistic goals."
