A wonderful event, well done Hepburn Shire Council

📽️ Filming of the inaugural TEDx Daylesford Youth Talks took place at Daylesford College last month, and the talks are now available to view online 👀

We are really proud of the young people who took part and shared their vision for a better world for all 🌏

Over the next few days we'll be sharing each of the talks here on FB ⬇️

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organised events are branded TEDx, where x = an independently organised TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Congratulations on Ada Donker for their talk at TEDx talk at TEDxDaylesford.

How I found meaning through volunteering and you can too... I’m 15 years old, and have lived in Glenlyon for most of my life. Outside of school, I train and volunteer with St John Ambulance, work part-time at a supermarket, play the violin, swim, enjoy outdoor adventure sports, and focus on my studies. I can honestly say that volunteering has been one of the most rewarding and enriching experiences I’ve ever had. The people I’ve met, the places I’ve been, and the skills I’ve learned have all been incredibly valuable and eye-opening.

Congratulations Katie Newton for their TEDx talk at TedxDaylesford!

Sport has improved my mental health and might improve yours... I am 14 and live in a small town, Wheatsheaf, where I've grown up and lived all my life. My hobbies include playing sport, drawing and dancing. I chose to do this talk because it means a lot to me and is a great opportunity to share my ideas.

Congratulations Sage Wolfshorter on their TEDx talk at TEDxDaylesford!

Let me share with you the power of persistence... My idea is about perseverance; having a goal and seeing it through because reward comes through effort over time and the wonderful feeling of achieving something you've persisted with and worked hard for.

Congratulations Rue Marsh for their TEDx talk at TEDxDaylesford!

Why public transport is so important for communities, particularly young people... I grew up around video games and recently started learning how to make them. Games and how they are made are a very important part of my life. Good game design is built on three principles: fun, balance and coherence. I am a year twelve student at Daylesford Secondary College and my hobbies are reading, writing, playing bass and playing video games.

Thank you sincerely to the and to La Trobe University, Bendigo for standing strong on its ongoing commitment to oppose antisemitism and Islamophobia in our region via the clear articulation and communication of the university’s anti-racism plan.

That plan states that “criticism of Israel can be antisemitic when it is grounded in harmful tropes, stereotypes or assumptions and when it calls for the elimination of the State of Israel or all Jews or when it holds Jewish individuals or communities responsible for Israel’s actions.”

Very simple, very clear and critical to stand by and uphold.

Free speech is central to our way of life in Australia but free speech does not mean hate speech. And ignorance is no excuse for confusing the two. Discouraging hate speech and encouraging respectful dialogue is not censorship.

Peope interested in building community - via festivals, events, gatherings, and opportunities for people to connect - should prioritise being curious to better understand each other not being right at the expense of others.

Choose peace.
