QOTD because it's been a bit of a hot topic in the chair as of late:
Do you like your dreadlocks looking freshly maintained, or do you prefer them once they’ve had a little time to settle back in?

This one is likely to split the dread world down the middle because everyone has such a different idea of when their dreadlocks look “best.” Some people love that freshly maintained feeling, some prefer a bit of fluff and movement, and some are firmly in the “leave them alone until absolutely necessary” side of the debate.

There’s really no one correct answer. Dreadlocks have a habit of developing their own personality anyway. But, for any of my longer term clients who saw me with my dreadlocks (they're coming back soon, I swear!) then you guys know I'm pretty big on keeping mine maintained and tight.

Where do you sit in this debate? Fresh and tidy, lived-in and fluffy, or somewhere in the middle? Comment and let me know. 💬

And maybe this has reminded you that you need to book maintenance too... You can do that right here 👉🏻 https://www.evelynjadecreations.com/s/appointments with the brand new simplified booking options.

So remember yesterday's dreadlock recovery mission? Well, here's what else we did for her.

(If you haven't seen yesterdsts post, you totally should.)

She decided she wanted two dreadlocks instead of the just the one. Her vision was the cut her existing in dreadlock in half to use it as an extension for the new one. I totally loved this idea and said 'hell yeah, let's do it".

So I created that matching dreadlock on the opposite side, then took half the length from her incredibly long original dreadlock and used it to extend the new one. Now the two sit as a balanced pair with a bit of the original dreadlock in each side.

Dreadlocks can be repaired, strengthened, reshaped and even thoughtfully repurposed like this when their length or structure allows. It doesn’t always have to mean losing something that holds a lot of meaning.
It is actually a lovely challenge to be trusted to come up with a plan for when someone needs something important or special to be added or shuffled so it can stay for longer.

There’s just something so special about being trusted to work on dreadlocks that carry this much personal and spiritual significance. Getting to help preserve their story while giving them the strength to keep going is something I’ll never take lightly.

If you would like some help with a meaningful part of your dreadlock journey, I'm always happy to help.
The best way to begin planning is to book in a free consult so we can go over all your options.

This very special dreadlock had become quite thin at the base and was dangerously hanging on by a thread. 🫣

This is something I see from time to time. Clients are always super worried about it but I'm not. You know why? Look at all the surrounding hair we can use to re-establish a base for this dreadlock.

Once we get all the hair back into the dreadlock where it belongs, you can see the base is looking full and secure. The worryingly thin point of the dreadlock is no longer looking like it'll come off with one small knock or tug.
When I maintain big sections of loose hair and long regrowth like this, I advise my clients treat it like baby dreads for a while. There's a lot of new hair there that has to knot so a bit of gentle care doesn't go astray.

So why do dreadlocks thin out like this in cases where there is no hair thinning or loss?
Well, there can be a few:

🧡 For those with loose hair on top/partials, hair can snag in the hairbrush and, piece by piece, be pulled out of the dreadlock.
🧡 Hair has drifted to other dreadlocks whether by accident from loose hairs going on adventures or being maintained into the wrong dreadlocks.
🧡 It's been a while since maintenance so loose hair has just fall out a bit more than we would've liked.

No matter the reason, it's all fixable with a bit of time and a crochet hook.

This lovely client had another big step in her deadlock journey but I think this post is long enough as is. So... You'll have to come back tomorrow to see what else we did.

Did this get you thinking about your hair? My books are currently open and taking appointments for September (limited spaces left) and October.

A little close up of a maintenance before + after for your Sunday scroll. Isn't it amazing what one maintenance session can do to freshen up your dreadlocks? Absolute magic! 🪄

And whilst I’ve got you… a reminder that the new booking menu + pricing comes into effect September 1st.

If you’ve been meaning to get your next maintenance booked in, now is a very good time to do it.

Any appointments booked before September 1st will keep the current pricing, even if the appointment itself is for a later date.

Bookings are available over at https://www.evelynjadecreations.com/s/appointments to lock in the current pricing before the changeover happens.

I've opened my calendars up all the way into early November to give everybody a shot at keeping that old pricing or one last appointment before things shift a little.
As a general guide of time needed for booking right now, my September dates are about 50% full and October is beginning to fill up too. For bigger work such as Extra Love Maintenance or New Full Heads of Dreadlocks or Braid-Ins Sets, there is about a 2-ish week wait time.

But, overall, I'll always do my best to fit everybody in as best as I can! I'm an overachiever like that. 😆

Natural braid appointments have thousands of reasons for being good but here's just my top faves that clients have told me are why they choose natural braids.

🧡 I get a style that will make my next few days so much easier.
🧡 I'm going for surgery and braids are great for keeping the hair back and tangle free whilst I recover.
🧡 I look fabulous.
🧡 I'm sick of doing my kids hair every morning. I can get it braided on Sunday so I can have a few days of no hair chaos for school.

Why do you like your hair braided? Let me know in the comments below so we can encourage others to jump on the braid bandwagon.

Did we sell it to you? You can book your natural braids or (if you want fancy) braids with extensions over at https://www.evelynjadecreations.com/s/appointments

It's wild to me that it's been 6 years. 🥹

For anyone who doesn't know the story...

Back in 2018 I signed up for my first dreadlock course. After a struggle to get models, even for free work, I dropped out and gave up on the dream.

But in 2020, with the world on lockdown, I decided to finish what I started. I rejoined the course and started again.

This time, I got a totally different outcome that somehow snowballed into this insane thing I now call a business. 😆

Almost four years ago, I was offered the opportunity to rent a space in the soon-to-be Ritual Adornment Maitland that Kel and AJ were just about to open. Initially, I was so worried I couldn't make it work because I was still such a baby in business, so I said no.
But after much thought, I said "f•ck it, let's do it" and sent off a message saying to sign me up for the chaos.

And now, here we are, looking at the six-year anniversary of my crazy idea to take the leap and start a business.

Over those six years, I've changed a lot.

I've learned what kind of hair I love creating. I've figured out what sort of space I want to build for my clients.
I've made mistakes, changed things, changed them again, and slowly built something that feels more and more like me.

So it feels incredibly fitting that, as I celebrate six years in business, I get to introduce the new business name that feels like it belongs to everything this little business has become:

🌙🦊 WOVEN WILDS HAIR 🦊🌙

It's dreadlocks, braids, creativity, weird ideas and beautiful hair, now wrapped up under a name that finally feels right.

From October 1st, you’ll see the new name and branding popping up across socials, bookings, emails, etc as everything makes the switch over. But overall, it's still the same me offering the same service you know and love.

I want to take this chance to thank you all for being part of it.
Whether you were here from the start or joined along the way, I'm so grateful to every single one of you for putting your faith in me to create magical hair for you.

Six years later, the business looks very different from the little idea I started with.
And I think that's kind of the point.

Welcome to Woven Wilds. 🖤

I recently got the honour to create this awesome set of dreadlocks for a client but they had a request that I absolutely had to help with.

This lovely client unfortunately lost someone very close to them around the time we began discussing their dreadlocks. My heart absolutely shattered for them. Losing a loved one is one of the hardest things we face in this world. So when they asked if I could add some of the loved ones hair (in a very similar colour to their own which is why you can't see a defined contrast) onto the end of a dreadlock at our installation, there was no second thoughts about saying yes.

Not only did we add this hair in so they permanently have this loved one with them, we also discussed how when it comes time for a trim I will opt to cut the dreadlock and move the tail/end "up" the dreadlock like an extension so they don't have to say goodbye until they decide the time is right for them.

It was an absolute honour to be trusted with something so meaningful for this client. I know how hard it can be to trust someone with moments like these and I'm glad my chair felt safe for that.

Definitely one of those appointments I’ll remember for a while. 🧡

If you would like some help honouring a loved one, I'm always happy to help find you something that brings them close to your heart (and hair).
Not everyone has their loved ones hair but we can also do hair wraps, favourite colours, or even themed beads to represent your loved one amongst your dreadlocks.

The best way to begin planning for something beautiful is to book in a consult so we can go over all the details for you and honour them in the best way possible.

Is it time to book that appointment? 🤔
The answer is yes!

My bookings are now open for September and October for anyone who is getting that calling to fix the floofy fly aways or those far too friendly dreadlocks that are sticking together like besties. Love the good friendship but it's not quite what we are going for. 😂
New clients are always welcome too! I've had a lot of lovely humans asking if I'm taking new clients and the answer is a big YES. I love having new faces in my chair so please know you are very welcome.

✨ BOOKING + PRICING CHANGES FROM SEPTEMBER 1ST ✨

I know everything costs more at the moment, and I really don’t love the idea of being another business adding to that. I’ve tried to hold my prices where they are for as long as I reasonably can, but the time has come.

At the same time, my maintenance menu has become a little too much. 😂 Too many options is leaving too many people wondering which bloody button they’re supposed to press.

So rather than just raising prices, I’m using this as a chance to properly reshuffle things and make booking simpler.

🤔 SO WHAT’S CHANGING?

• New Dreadlock Categories

🌙 Mini | 1–20
🌙 Partial | 21–40
🌙 Classic Full Head | 41–70
🌙 Volume Full Head | 71–100

These better reflect the fuller, higher-count sets I’m now seeing and allow appointments to be timed and priced more accurately.

• Simpler Maintenance

Maintenance will now sit under just two options:

⭐ Express Maintenance
For well-separated dreadlocks that only need a quick root tidy.

⭐ Full Maintenance
For new clients, overdue maintenance (5 months +), lots of loose hair or joined dreadlocks, or length work.

Because the categories and services are changing, maintenance pricing will shift slightly from September 1st. I’ve done my best to keep this as small as possible.

BUT... any maintenance appointment booked before September 1st will keep the current pricing, even if the appointment itself is later.

• Other Small Shuffles

Human hair, wool and synthetic dreadlock extensions will also receive updated pricing as material costs have risen. 😞

Services priced by dreadlock quantity, such as trims, may also look a little different as they move into the new categories.

📝 IN SHORT

The dreadlock work I’m doing has changed, so my booking system is changing with it. That means simpler booking, clearer categories and some mild price changes.

Already booked? Nothing changes for you.
Not booked yet? Book before September 1st to lock in current pricing.
