Every painting begins long before the first brushstroke.

Before colour ever touches the canvas, the foundation is created by hand.

Layers of texture are carefully built using sculptural mediums, creating movement, depth and an emotional landscape that becomes part of the artwork itself. Every ridge, line and contour is intentional, designed to catch the light, add dimension, and become part of the painting’s story.

It’s a slow process. Each layer needs time to dry before the next can be added, but that’s where the magic begins.

Texture isn’t just something you see... it’s something you feel.

These textured foundations will soon disappear beneath layers of colour, glazes and detail, but they’ll always remain at the heart of the finished piece, giving it life, energy and character.

Sometimes the most important part of creating art is the part no one ever sees.

What if colour could change not just how a room looks... but how it feels?

This weekend I had the privilege of presenting Colour Psychology in Design at the Build & Design Centre, Brisbane.

Seeing a room full of designers, homeowners and creatives exploring the emotional impact of colour was incredibly rewarding.

For over 30 years my work has explored the relationship between colour, emotion and wellbeing.

As an artist, author of How Good Can You Stand It, and Colour Psychology Specialist, I’ve always believed colour should be chosen with intention - not simply because it’s fashionable.

Every colour tells a story.
Every space should too.

One of the most exciting outcomes from the seminar was being invited to consult on upcoming residential design projects.

Helping people create homes that feel calm, inspiring, welcoming or energising through intentional colour selection is exactly where my passion lies.

Colour isn’t just decoration.

It’s an experience.

Kia Kaha (Be Strong)
Powerlessness. Devastation. Turmoil. Torment.
The central figure stands powerless against what is happening within her. She is barely holding on, restrained by invisible bonds she feels unable to break. She watches herself slipping away, yet feels helpless to stop it.
The figure on the left has dissolved. She can no longer fight. She no longer recognises herself. She has been stripped bare - nothing is left but emptiness.
The figure on the right embodies torment, anger and fear, yet she continues to fight to hold herself together. She feels herself disappearing, silently screaming as her identity slips further from reach.
This work is inspired by traumatic seizures and the psychological aftermath that ensues. It recognises the suffering that so many people endure through invisible illness and trauma and neurological conditions. Society often tells us to “be strong,” as though strength is measured by how well we hide our pain. But true strength is something quieter.
Real strength is enduring when you feel completely lost. It is surviving when you feel as though you are being torn apart. It is holding on when your mind and body no longer feel like your own.
Kia Kaha is a reminder to search for the smallest thread of light within yourself, however faint its voice may become. Through the fog, the heaviness and the dissociation, there remains a place where the soul remembers who you are. Hold onto that place. Let it guide you forward until, piece by piece, you find your way back to yourself.

Beauty is in the layers.

This work I have started explores the relationship between texture, memory and transformation. Weathered earth tones meet calming blues and greens, creating a palette that feels both grounded and restorative.

Each torn fragment carries its own history. Layered together, they form a visual language of resilience - evidence that our experiences, even the imperfect ones, become part of something larger and more meaningful.

The surface is intentionally rich and tactile, encouraging the viewer to move closer. As the light changes throughout the day, new details emerge, revealing hidden textures, subtle colour shifts and intricate passages that cannot be seen from afar.

A reminder that depth is rarely found on the surface.
