What do children actually learn in Preschool dance classes?

Quite a lot!

At Inner West Dance Melbourne, our Preschool classes introduce children to the foundations of dance through activities and exercises designed for their age and stage of development.

Our little dancers learn how to move to music, develop coordination and balance, practise dance steps and begin putting movements together.

They're also learning to listen to their teacher, follow instructions, remember sequences and work alongside other children.

And while they're developing their dance skills, they're also building confidence, independence and friendships.

Of course, every child learns at their own pace. Our teachers understand this and provide the encouragement, guidance and challenges each dancer needs as they progress.

We love seeing those little moments when something they've been practising finally clicks!

Do parents stay in the room during their child's first dance class?

Yes! At Inner West Dance Melbourne, parents are welcome to watch their child's first trial class.

We know that starting something new can be a big step for little dancers, and sometimes for their parents too!

Every child develops at their own pace. Some children are happy to join in independently straight away, while others need a little more time, reassurance and encouragement to feel comfortable.

Our Preschool teachers understand this and work with families to help each child settle into class.

From their next class, we encourage children to come in independently, with parents saying goodbye at the door. This helps our dancers build confidence, listen to their teacher and focus on learning their dance skills.

We know this transition can take a little longer for some children, and our teachers are there to provide the encouragement and support they need along the way.

And there are still opportunities to see their progress! During Open Week, we invite families into classes to see what their dancers have been learning.

There's a lot more happening in dance class than just learning the steps.

As our dancers prepare for EMOTIONS, our teachers are continuing to work on all the things that make them stronger dancers.

Technique. Timing. Control. Musicality. Performance.

Sometimes that means stopping to work on one movement. Sometimes it's a correction that makes a big difference. And sometimes it's practising the same section again until everyone gets it together.

Our dancers are learning their performance routines, but they're also continuing to develop the skills they'll take into their next class, their next performance and the years ahead. That's what we love about teaching dance at IWD. The performance is exciting, but the learning that happens along the way matters just as much.

It's COSTUME FITTING time!

Things are getting very exciting as we start trying on costumes for our End of Year Performance, EMOTIONS!

Our costume boxes are ready, the dances are labelled, and over the coming weeks our dancers will start seeing another little piece of their performance come together.

There's something special about the moment a dancer tries on their costume and starts imagining themselves on stage!

We're keeping the costumes themselves a surprise for now, but we can't wait for everyone to see them.

What if my child won’t join in at their first dance class?

That’s completely okay. For some preschoolers, walking into a new dance class and joining straight in is easy. For others, it takes a little more time.

At Inner West Dance Melbourne, we don’t expect every child to feel confident the moment they walk through the door.

Some children watch for a while before joining in. Some need a little encouragement from their teacher. Others might happily do one activity and then need some time before they’re ready for the next.

Our teachers will support and encourage them while giving them the space to become comfortable with the class.

Over time, we want our preschool dancers to learn to participate independently, listen to their teacher, try new things and build their dance skills. But we know those things don't always happen in the very first class. What does it take to turn choreography into a performance?

It starts with teaching. Our teachers demonstrate and break down the choreography. Our dancers learn the steps, practise them, work on their technique and listen to corrections.

Then we start putting the pieces together. Spacing. Formations. Timing. Musicality. Performance.

Learning how to dance as a group while still bringing their own character to the stage. And then we practise it again.

There is still plenty of work ahead before EMOTIONS reaches the stage in November, but this is the part of the process where so much of the learning happens.

Our teachers support our dancers every step of the way, while continuing to challenge them to improve.
