4 years ago, Tania Attard and I invited a bunch of our favourite music theatre creatives to a dinner.
The point of the dinner was to inform our tribe of our impending endeavour:
To start a boutique theatre company, with the express purpose to create and perform high end music theatre and cabaret shows in a professional environment with very little sets, props and costumes.

Red Giraffe Theatre was born.

Rent sold out before we opened!

Hor’Dourves a 3 night cabaret show exploring 6 amazing musicals at The Mackay Grande Suites sold out!

13 the musical had a cast of 38 teenagers in one musical singing, dancing and acting like Mackay has never seen. 13 was the first project to incorporate youth artists from EVERY dancing, singing and acting school in one production!

VAMP was a female only cabaret show showcasing the vocal delights of Mackay’s premier singers and was a huge success.

It Takes Two was a cabaret show utilising the vocal stylings from giraffes of mixed ages and it blew the roof off of Dirty Martinis.

Performances at The Little Tribe Festival, Rotary Foundation Dinner, boutique 50th bday celebrations and The Just Saying Project followed. And a special workshop with music theatre star Kurt Phelan.

Then, we took on Songs For a New World and it was everything the company wanted-beautiful songs from delicious singers.

What’s next?
A CHORUS LINE this weekend. And... we’re more than ready.

* For the record, Kyra Geoghegan came up with the company name. It’s no coincidence she has been a major part of every production - we adore her.

Interested to know a little about our fabulous vocal coach Sharon Thompson:

Sharon takes great pleasure in teaching people of all ages how to sing with enjoyment, ease and safety. Sharon’s early voice training culminated in a Bachelor of Music Education (Honours)(Voice) from the University of Queensland, Brisbane in 1998. After graduating Sharon spent time in the secondary school system teaching classroom Music, Drama and English whilst also teaching private voice lessons.
Sharon returned home to Mackay in 2001 and during the following years had onstage roles in many MMCP productions. Adelaide Adams in Calamity Jane, Phyllis in 42nd Street, Ensemble in Mikado and My Fair Lady to name a few. In 2009 Sharon stepped off the stage to direct the production Nunsense performed by Caprice. Sharon has vocal coached many productions – she was the Vocal Coach for MMCP productions ‘Joseph’ in 2013, ‘Legally Blonde’ in 2015 and ‘Mary Poppins’ in 2016.
Sharon continues to successfully compete in vocal competitions and most recently was awarded the Phyl Williams Memorial Trophy awarded to the singer securing the highest points of the open sections in the aggregate competition in the recent Mackay Eisteddfod.
Sharon has been teaching voice privately for the last 20 years is the owner/principal of her busy singing studio, Thompson Voice Studio. A current performer, Sharon hopes her enthusiasm for the stage is reflected in her students. Sharon loves to work with singers across all styles and cannot wait to work with the cast in her first collaboration with Red Giraffe Theatre and ‘A Chorus Line’.

A Chorus Line examines one day in the lives of seventeen dancers, all vying for a spot in the “chorus line” of a Broadway musical. After the first round of cuts, Zach, the director and choreographer, asks each dancer to speak about themselves. Discomfort opens into revelation, confession leads to redemption, and within the bright, outwardly homogenous chorus, the audience begins to see each dancer’s individuality. From Cassie, the star who just needs the “music and the mirror and the chance to dance,” to Val, a small-town girl with a brand-new big-town body, to Mike, who took his sister’s place in dance class, saying “I can do that.” Based on real Broadway dancers’ stories, as told to fellow dancer and choreographer Michael Bennett, A Chorus Line is funny, heartbreaking, and refreshingly honest.
