Meet Our Members – David Phillips

David Phillips has been a member of Creative Shots Photo Club since 2005, but his interest in photography began much earlier. As a child, he first discovered photography using his mum's Box Brownie camera and enjoyed looking through the family's collection of slides and photographs. He has always been someone who enjoys making and creating things, from leatherwork to a variety of other hobbies, but photography was the one creative pursuit that truly stuck.

David spent many years photographing landscapes before discovering his real passion—astrophotography and deep space imaging. Capturing galaxies, nebulae and distant stars isn't easy, and that's exactly what appeals to him. The technical challenges involved in planning, capturing and processing these images are all part of the enjoyment.

One of the things David values most about Creative Shots Photo Club is the opportunity to get out with other photographers. Sharing outings, ideas and experiences with like-minded people has been a big part of his enjoyment of the club over the years.

When asked what photography brings to his life, David jokes that it keeps his bank balance low! But behind the humour is a genuine sense of achievement. For him, photography is about setting a challenge, learning new skills and overcoming technical obstacles. There's nothing more satisfying than putting in the effort and producing an image that he's truly proud of.

*"Photography is about the challenge. The harder it is to capture the image, the greater the satisfaction when everything comes together."*

# # # 🧠📸 Community Spirit & a Little Trivia!

Luckily, here at **Creative Shots Photo Club**, we have plenty of talented photographers… and when it comes to trivia, it turns out **some of us know lots of stuff — and some of us know not much at all!** 😂

But that certainly didn't stop us from having a **beaut fun night** at the Mackay VIEW Club Trivia Night!

Our very own **Elizabeth** is also the President of Mackay VIEW Club, and not only does she put on the best smile, she and the wonderful VIEW Club members certainly know how to put on a great night. 👏❤️

As a long-standing club in the Mackay community, we think it's important to support the people and organisations around us. It's also a pretty good excuse to get together, share plenty of laughs and enjoy a little friendly competition along the way.

Thank you to **Mackay VIEW Club** for a terrific evening and for all you do to support **The Smith Family's Learning for Life program**. A wonderful cause and a wonderful night.

Now, seeing as we're all trivia experts after our big night out, here's one for you…

📸 **PHOTOGRAPHY LESSON – FREEZING THE ACTION**

Photographing a fast-moving subject can be challenging. Whether it’s sport, wildlife, kids running around or even your dog racing across the yard, the trick is to use settings that help **freeze the movement and keep your subject sharp**.

Here’s a simple starting point:

🔴 **Shutter Speed:** Try **1/1000 sec or faster**. The faster your subject is moving, the faster your shutter speed may need to be.

🔴 **Focus Mode:** Use **Continuous AF / Servo AF** so your camera continues adjusting focus as your subject moves.

🔴 **Drive Mode:** Select **Continuous/Burst Shooting**. This gives you several frames to choose from and increases your chances of capturing that perfect moment.

🔴 **Focus Area:** Keep your focus point or tracking area over your subject. Modern cameras may also have **subject, animal, vehicle or eye tracking**, which can be a great help.

🔴 **Watch Your ISO:** Fast shutter speeds let in less light, so you may need to increase your ISO or use **Auto ISO** to maintain a good exposure.

💡 **PHOTO TIP:** Don’t be afraid to take a short burst of several images. With action photography, a fraction of a second can make the difference between an ordinary shot and a great one.

And remember – these settings are only a **starting point**. Experiment with your camera and adjust them to suit the subject, the available light and the effect you want to create.

📷 **Give it a try!** Find something that moves and see just how sharply you can freeze the action.

📷 **PHOTO HISTORY TRIVIA – FREEZING INSECTS IN FLIGHT!** 🐝

Today, capturing a bee, butterfly or dragonfly perfectly frozen in mid-air is something many wildlife and macro photographers enjoy. But imagine trying to do it **more than 50 years ago!**

In the early 1970s, British photographer **Stephen Dalton** set himself the challenge of photographing insects in free flight with incredible clarity.

At the time, normal photographic equipment simply wasn't fast enough, so Dalton spent around **two years experimenting and building his own specialised equipment**. This included a specially designed shutter and an incredibly fast flash.

⚡ His flash could fire for just **1/25,000th of a second** – fast enough to freeze the movement of an insect's rapidly beating wings.

One of his famous photographs, taken in **1975**, shows a common wasp flying away after feeding from an apple. The image was created using his homemade equipment on **25 ASA Kodachrome film at f/16**.

Dalton's pioneering work allowed people to see details of insect flight and behaviour that had rarely, if ever, been captured in photographs before.

It is a wonderful reminder that photographers have always been experimenters – finding creative ways to make the seemingly impossible possible.

🐝 **PHOTO TRIVIA:**
If you were trying to photograph a flying insect today, what would you go for first – **a very fast shutter speed or flash?**

📸 **RIVER CITY PRINT COMPETITION – THE VOTES ARE IN!** 📸

What a great, fun night we had viewing all the wonderful print submissions from our members for the **River City Print Interclub Competition 2026**!

The aim of the evening was for our club members to view the submitted prints and vote for their favourite images in each category, helping us select the final prints that will represent Creative Shots Photo Club.

With pens in hand and some very serious decision-making happening, there were plenty of comments overheard around the room…

*"There are just too many good ones to choose from!"*
*"This is too hard!"*
*"How am I supposed to pick just six?"* 😂

And that really says it all. **What a talented bunch of photographers we have!**

A huge thank you to **Cheryl and Lenore** for organising the evening, with a very special thank you to Lenore, who put an enormous amount of work into organising the prints, categories and voting procedures.

Lenore's many years of experience organising prints for the Photography Section at the Mackay Show certainly came in handy! Everything ran beautifully and made what could have been a complicated selection process easy and enjoyable for everyone.

Of course, it wouldn't be a Creative Shots evening without plenty of smiling faces, photography conversations and a little socialising along the way — complete with wine, cheese and cups of tea. 🍷🧀☕

Now the votes can be tallied, the final selections made and our **20 prints prepared to head off to represent Creative Shots Photo Club** in the River City Print Interclub Competition.

We are incredibly proud of the quality and variety of work submitted by our members — and just as proud of the friendly, supportive club community behind those photographs.

Good luck to everyone whose images are selected, and thank you to **every member who submitted prints** and helped make our first River City entry possible.

📷 Great photography.
❤️ Great friendships.
😊 And a great night together.

📸 **What a Weekend with Julie Powell!** 🎬✨

Think **Hollywood glamour, classic Film Noir, dramatic lighting and old-school style with a modern twist** — that was the theme for our fantastic weekend of portrait photography with Julie Powell!

Saturday and Sunday were all about portraits, with Julie taking us through a variety of lighting techniques, different lighting modifiers and creative elements to help us achieve those beautiful, moody looks reminiscent of another era.

And of course, a **HUGE round of applause for our wonderful models! 👏👏👏** They were absolutely delightful, patient and so much fun to work with. They really helped bring Julie's concepts and our images to life, and we can't thank them enough.

🎨 **Light Painting with Still Life** on Saturday afternoon was a real eye-opener for many of our members. Watching Julie demonstrate how she builds an image with light showed just how creative you can be with a darkened room, a few simple tools and a little imagination.

💻 Then came Monday's **editing and creative processing workshop** — and it was jam-packed! Julie shared so much information, demonstrated techniques, answered questions and showed us plenty of "how-tos". There was so much to cover that we actually ran out of time!

Throughout the entire weekend, Julie was wonderful at explaining not only **how** to use the techniques, but also how to think creatively about what we were trying to achieve. Her friendly, approachable and helpful manner was very much appreciated by everyone.

Speaking on behalf of all the Creative Shots Photo Club members who attended...

**It was a darn good weekend! 📸❤️**

A huge thank you to **Julie Powell** for making the trip to Mackay and sharing your knowledge, creativity and enthusiasm with us. We have certainly come away with plenty of new ideas to try!

And thank you to everyone behind the scenes who helped organise, set up, pack down and make the weekend happen. Another great Creative Shots weekend! 🎬📷✨

📸 **CLUE & CAPTURE – CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE!** 🚗🔎

**Saturday 22 August | 8:30 am – 12:00 pm**

Our next Creative Shots Photo Club outing is something a little different — **Clue & Capture!**

Think of it as a **Choose Your Own Adventure for photographers**. Last year’s Clue & Capture was a lot of fun, and we loved seeing just how differently everyone interpreted the clues. So, to keep us guessing, Helen has created a **brand-new set of 12 clues** for this year!

📍 **Meet:** Jubilee Centre / MECC car park
🕣 **8:30 am for a 9:00 am start**

At the meeting point, Helen will hand out your sheet of **12 photographic clues**. From there, your adventure is entirely up to you!

There are no set locations and no right or wrong answers. Your challenge is to find and photograph an image that you think best captures each clue. We’ll be looking for interpretations that are **creative, quirky, unexpected and a little different**.

You can stay close to town or venture a little further afield — **time is really your only restriction**.

And while everyone gets to choose their own adventure, you certainly don't have to do it alone. Sharing a car and heading off together is absolutely fine. **We are a very social club, after all!** 📷😄

🍻 **We’ll finish at Red Dog Brewery at 12:00 pm for lunch**, where we can catch up, compare adventures and hear how everyone tackled the clues.

Grab your camera, bring your imagination and get ready to see Mackay through a slightly different lens!

**What will you capture?** 📸🔎

📸 Creative Shots Photo Club – Meeting Tomorrow Night! 📸

Join us on Wednesday 19th August for another great evening of photography, friendship and inspiration.

🕖 6:45pm for a 7:00pm start

🏆 Competition entries are due by midnight for:
• Open Colour
• Monochrome
• Creative
• Set Subject: Colloid

What is a colloid?

A colloid is a mixture where tiny particles of one substance are dispersed through another. Think smoke, fog, ink, hairspray or emulsions. Your challenge is to capture an image where light passes through the colloid and the two substances begin to mix. We can't wait to see everyone's creative interpretations!

🖼️ We'll also be reviewing the submissions for the River City Print Competition. This is your opportunity to have a say in which images will represent our very talented club in this year's competition.

And, of course, there'll be our usual delicious supper, plenty of photography conversations, sharing of ideas, technical tips, inspiration and a few laughs along the way.

Creative Shots Photo Club is all about the love of photography, developing friendships, encouraging creativity and supporting each other on our photographic journey—no matter what stage you're at.

📍 Jubilee Community Centre – Sarina Meeting Room

We'd love to see you there! 💛📷

📸 Creative Photography Tip 4: Composition Creates the Story

Before you worry about camera settings, spend time arranging your scene.

Ask yourself:
• Where should the viewer's eye begin?
• What is my main subject?
• Does every object belong?
• Is there balance between light and dark?
• Have I removed distractions?

The strongest still life images rarely happen by accident—they're carefully composed.

Move objects. Change your viewpoint. Simplify. Refine.

📷 In still life photography, composition isn't just important—it's the foundation of every successful image.
