🌟 Celebrating Our Young Photographers 🌟

One of the most rewarding parts of the Mackay Show Photography Competition is seeing the incredible talent emerging from the young people in our region.

Photography encourages creativity, observation, storytelling, patience, and problem-solving skills. It teaches young people to see the world differently, build confidence in their abilities, and express their unique perspective. Entering competitions also helps develop resilience, encourages personal growth, and provides valuable experience in presenting their work to others.

This year's Youth Section featured some truly outstanding images, making the judges' task both challenging and enjoyable.

Congratulations to our Champion Print winners:

"Griffen" by Flynn Kynaston

πŸ† Champion Print – Youth Primary
"Breaststroke" by Amelia Dolzon

Pictured here is Flynn with his wonderful image, Griffen, a beautiful portrait of his cat that captured the attention of the judges and earned the Champion Print award in the Secondary Section.

A huge congratulations to all the young photographers who entered. Every entry represents creativity, effort, and the courage to share your work with others. We hope to see many of you continue your photographic journey in the years ahead.

πŸ† Congratulations to our Creative Shots members on their success in the Mackay Show Photography Competition! πŸ“·

A special congratulations to Wendy Coad on being awarded Champion Print β€” a wonderful achievement.

Congratulations also to our other award recipients:
✨ Lenore Hansen
✨ Rob Crutcher
✨ Christine Williams

We are incredibly proud of all our members who entered this year's competition.

While awards and placings are always exciting, photography competitions are about so much more than winning. Putting your work out there for judging can be daunting, especially when you're sharing images that you have created with passion and pride. Every member who entered deserves recognition for having the courage to participate and challenge themselves.

Competition is one of the best ways to expand your photographic horizons, receive valuable feedback, learn from others, and continue growing as a photographer. The improvement that comes from regularly entering and reviewing results is often remarkable.

πŸ“Έ Pictured here is Wendy being congratulated by our Club President, Karen Monk, on receiving the Champion Print award.

Congratulations to everyone who entered and helped make this year's photography section such a success. πŸ‘

β˜•πŸ“Έ CCC EVENTS – Coffee, Camera & Conversation

June is Mackay Show Month, which means a fantastic opportunity to experiment with one of photography's most exciting subjects β€” fireworks! πŸŽ†

πŸŽ‡ June CCC Outing

πŸ“… Tuesday 16 June 2026
⏰ 6:30 pm

We have two meeting points for this outing:

🎑 If you're attending the Mackay Show
Meet outside the Photo Pavilion at 6:30pm. You'll find it by turning right after entering through the Milton Street entrance.

πŸ“· If you're not attending the Show
Meet at Toyota Corner at 6:30pm. Across the intersection is a grassy area that provides a great vantage point for photographing the fireworks. There are currently some works underway in the area, but hopefully these will be completed before the outing.

Fireworks are a wonderful subject for photographers of all levels. Whether you're aiming for classic bursts of colour or something a little more creative, there's plenty of room to experiment.

πŸ’‘ Why not look up the Focus Pulling Technique before the event? It can produce some stunning and unusual fireworks images and is a fun way to try something different.

Bring your camera, tripod, and your sense of adventure. We look forward to seeing what everyone creates!

πŸ“Έ Creative & Abstract Tip: Look Beyond the Whole Subject

Abstract photography often begins when you stop photographing the entire scene.

Instead, focus on:
β€’ Texture
β€’ Shape
β€’ Colour
β€’ Lines
β€’ Repetition
β€’ Tiny details

A peeling wall, reflections in water, or the centre of a flower can become an artwork all on their own.

Sometimes less reveals more.

πŸ“Έ Creative & Abstract Tip: Move the Camera on Purpose

Not every photo needs to be sharp.

Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) can create beautiful abstract effects using:
β€’ Slow shutter speeds
β€’ Panning
β€’ Twisting or zooming during exposure

Trees become paintings.
Lights become streaks.
Flowers become soft impressions of colour and shape.

✨ Experiment first β€” analyse later.

πŸ“šβœ¨ Exciting Workshop Coming to Creative Shots Photo Club βœ¨πŸ“š

We’re thrilled to announce that later this year we’ll be welcoming internationally respected artist and educator Anne Pappalardo to Mackay for a very special hands-on photobook workshop experience.

Over the workshop weekend, participants will create beautiful handcrafted concertina-style photobooks while exploring visual storytelling, sequencing images, and creative presentation techniques. Whether you are an experienced photographer or just beginning your creative journey, this workshop is designed to be inspiring, practical, and accessible.

Participants will leave with two β€” and possibly even three β€” completed handmade photobooks, along with skills and ideas they can continue using long after the workshop ends.

One of the featured books will be inspired by Anne’s beautiful β€œThrough My Window” concept, incorporating layered storytelling and creative design elements.

Workshops like this are a rare opportunity for Mackay photographers and creatives to learn directly from an experienced artist in a supportive and encouraging environment, and we are incredibly excited to bring this opportunity to our members and local creative community.

More details, dates, and booking information will be announced soon β€” so keep an eye on our page!

Available for members of Creative Shots Photo Club only.

πŸ“Έ Natural Light is Your Friend

Beautiful portraits don’t need complicated lighting.

Soft natural light can create stunning results:
β€’ Open shade
β€’ Window light
β€’ Early morning light
β€’ Late afternoon golden light

Avoid harsh overhead midday sun where possible, as it can create strong shadows and squinting.

Simple light often creates the most timeless portraits.
