My painting "Retreating Tide 1" won an award at Art on Show at the 500 pavilion last night. It was a companion piece for "Retreating Tide 2" which won in the Great Barrier Reef awards the week previously.

I walk the foreshore most mornings and am always fascinated by the changing tides. In these two pieces I explore the thresholds of land and sea, the rhythms and texture through layered marks and rhythms of this important natural and fragile environment.

Thankyou to judge, Michelle Hungerford, and Mackay Art Society Inc for a great night and thankyou to the person who loved it enough to buy it.

Over four unforgettable days, I had the privilege of leading a wonderful group of artists on Paint the Whitsundays, a creative voyage aboard the historic Solway Lass—a beautifully restored tall ship, more than a century old, sailing through one of Australia's most breathtaking landscapes.
Our journey began at the beautiful Cedar Gallery in Eungella, where the artists were welcomed into a space celebrating creativity. Alongside my fellow artist, and tutor, Kerry McNeil, I shared my work and approach to painting. I spoke about the importance of working en plein air—of slowing down, observing deeply, and allowing the landscape to guide the creative process.
Once aboard the Solway Lass, the rhythm of the sea became our studio.
There were unforgettable whale encounters that left us in awe, sails unfurling above us as the ship slipped silently through turquoise waters carried only by the wind, walks across pristine islands where time seemed to stand still, and moments spent snorkelling among vibrant reefs. We shared wonderful meals, laughter, stories, and the company of an extraordinary group of artists, supported by a generous and welcoming crew.
Each day offered opportunities to sketch, paint, learn, and simply be present—to absorb the changing light, the shifting colours of sea and sky, and the quiet beauty of the Whitsundays. It was a reminder that making art is not only about creating an image, but about paying attention, connecting with place, and sharing that experience with others.
I returned home with many ideas, a heart full of gratitude, and memories that will stay with me for a lifetime.
Thank you to everyone who shared this remarkable journey. It was a privilege to paint, teach, learn, and experience such a beautiful part of our country together.
