I have just delivered this new painting titled ‘Winter’s Silver Whisper’ to the beautiful Kin. in Loch. Always such a treat to visit this sumptuous store. This is the work in progress painting from my post a few back that I shared at the half wet and half dry stage. I’m pleased to have finished it (amongst the current craziness of trailer renovations) and send it out into the world to hopefully find a happy forever home! 🤍

I am so so so pleased this painting is selected for the Heysen Prize for Landscape 2026. My father’s favourite painter. What an absolute dream come true.

This painting is called ‘They tried to stitch the landscape back together’ and tells the story of how when the early German settlers first arrived in Gippsland they believed the presence of towering Strzelecki gums indicated the soil was abundantly fertile and set about clearing the land for agriculture. In an effort to combat the terrible resulting erosion - they did what had worked in Europe; and stabilized crumbling riverbanks and hillsides with imported blackberry canes. Unfortunately they were naive to the fact that without a heavy European snow season to limit their growth, their fast growing untameable thorns would quickly overgrow the landscape and become the major environmental problem we are still facing today.

Thank you Hahndorf Academy 💜🤎

This is how a painting looks in progress. (And why I don’t really show wips! Half wet and half dry - a bit of a mess!) painting in earth pigments is a real case of working backwards. With many layers of active material, understanding how the layers I put down first will interact with the layers I put on top, and pre-empting how a colour I’ve made changes as it dries has become second nature. But there’s still always surprises - because natural materials are unpredictable. All part of the puzzle and why I love this medium. 🤎🪨🧚‍♂️
