🌿 A little update on our new plant & shrimp tank! πŸ‘€πŸ¦

You might remember we shared this project a while back, a dedicated tank we're putting together with plans to eventually bring in aquarium plants and Neocaridina shrimp.

Progress has been a little slower than planned, but we're still working on it behind the scenes!

One of the next steps was building the matten filter, which is now installed and ready to become the main filtration for the future shrimp colony. 🦐

Why a matten filter?

They're a great option for shrimp tanks because they provide plenty of biological filtration while creating a large, gentle filtration surface that is much less likely to suck up tiny shrimp and shrimplets.

We've also put together a guide showing how we built our matten filter, including the materials and setup.

πŸ‘‰ Want to build your own? Check out the guide on our website:

https://www.rippleeffectaquatics.com.au/blogs/how-to-set-up-your-aquarium/matten-filters-how-they-work-how-to-build-one-why-theyre-great-for-aquariums

There's still plenty more to do before this tank is finished, but we're slowly getting there! 🌿🦐

Stop losing fry and shrimplets to aggressive filter intakes. Learn how to build a gentle, zero-risk DIY shrimp filter that doubles as a giant feeding wall.

❀️ Look who's starting to grow!

Our locally bred Dragon Blood Peacock juveniles have been settling in really well and are starting to put on some good size. At around 5cm now, they're becoming much more confident, exploring their surroundings and looking happy and healthy.

It's always cool watching young cichlids grow and seeing their personalities and colours start coming through.

As they mature, the males will develop that deep red/pink colour they're known for, absolutely stunning fish! ❀️ The females will generally retain more of the colouration you can see here.

It's always exciting watching them grow and seeing those colours develop! πŸ‘€πŸŸ

A new project is starting in the fish room πŸ‘€πŸŒΏπŸ¦

We've been a bit quiet lately, but there's something exciting in the works!

We’re putting together a dedicated planted aquarium with the goal of expanding into aquarium plants and Neocaridina shrimp in the future.

The tank is currently cycling, with plenty of plans ahead, including upgrading the setup (RGB lighting for plant health and substrates), building a matten filter and creating a healthy environment for a future shrimp colony.

It’s only the beginning, but we’re excited to share the journey as this tank develops!

A bit of fish room reality πŸ‘€πŸŸ

Not everything in fishkeeping goes to plan, and that’s just part of it.

Sometimes you’ll see hundreds of fry appear out of nowhere, and other times you’ll get full breeding behaviour with nothing coming of it.

At the end of the day, fish will be fish.

The biggest part of it all is the day to day maintenance, keeping every tank stable, healthy, and consistent.

But when it does come together, watching fish display their true colours during breeding, watching fry grow out, and seeing them go on to good homes makes it all worth it in the end!

P.s. Always appreciate getting updates when fish are thriving in their new home tanks, it’s always great to see! Thank you all so much πŸ’™

Feel free to share your setups, ask questions, or message us anytime, always happy to help.

Want to breed your Bristlenose Plecos but not sure where to start? πŸ‘€πŸŸ

Breeding bristlenose can be easier than many people think, but getting consistent results often comes down to a few key factors.

In our latest blog, we cover:

β€’ How to s*x males and females
β€’ Conditioning and diet before breeding
β€’ Water changes and spawning triggers
β€’ Choosing the right caves
β€’ Tips for improving breeding success

If you've ever wanted to raise your own batch of bristlenose fry, this guide is for you πŸ‘

Big moment in the fish room πŸ‘€πŸ§‘

After such a long time, our Orange Spot Bristlenose pair are finally showing breeding behaviour again!

You can see the female sitting inside the cave while the male guards the entrance and makes sure she stays tucked away safely. If all goes well, hopefully there will be eggs very soon 🀞

Orange Spot Bristlenose (Rio Ucayali) are a rarer type of bristlenose pleco, so seeing this behaviour again is pretty exciting.

Now we wait and see if the male gets the cave full of eggs πŸ₯šπŸŸ

Plenty happening in the fish room lately πŸ‘€πŸŸ

β€’ Shell dweller fry continuing to appear 🐚
β€’ Ellioti fry growing fast and colouring up nicely
β€’ Longfin calico bristlenose numbers building again
β€’ Albino bristlenose have had a new batch of fry
β€’ Peppermint bristlenose sizing up well, may have some Large Male , Female & pairs avaliable by the end of the year
β€’ More breeding activity starting as cooler weather settles in

Lots more favourites and higher stock numbers on the way πŸ‘

New fish room addition - Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus) 🐟

These tiny little corydoras stay around just 2.5–3cm fully grown, making them an excellent choice for nano aquariums and small peaceful community tanks.

Unlike larger corys that spend majority of their time on the floor, Pygmy Corydoras like to spend more time midwater swimming in little schools! Their peaceful nature makes them a great option for beginners, planted tanks, and community setups with other small, non-aggressive fish.

βœ” Peaceful community fish
βœ” Great for planted and nano aquariums
βœ” Beginner friendly
βœ” Best kept in groups

Just make sure tank mates are peaceful and small enough not to see them as food.
