Today, we remember legendary director and designer Franco Zeffirelli, born on this day in 1923. Seen here sculpting a set piece for his monumental staging of Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra, Zeffirelli created 11 Met productions between 1964 and 1998, with this season’s revivals of his stagings of Puccini’s La Bohème and Turandot dedicated to his memory.
