Celtic Circle Dance Company

Celtic Circle Dance Company We are a neo-pagan Celtic based dance group. Traditionally Irish Dancing was taught and danced predominantly by men for men.

As such there is a very definite masculine base to this dance form, especially in the solo dances. Women have feminised it somewhat through costuming and grooming yet movements remain very staccato and sharp. Celtic Circle is venturing out to bring back some feminine balance through inspirations of other celtic folk dance forms, included but not limited to Scotland and Galacia. Softer more flowing

movements using the upper body and manipulation of skirts/dresses are taught for the female students, whilst the traditional straight arms and sharp upper body movements are kept for the male students. In a nutshell - we dance as we imagine Irish dance would have evolved without the invasion of the English. Part modern, part traditional, part pagan.

Life is full of spirals, and right now for Celtic Circle Dance, it is a return to the underworld. As you may have noticed, there has not been a lot of energy being put into the group or classes recently.

This has been mainly due to the excessive amount of energy needed for my university course. I am attempting full time Masters in Osteopathy this year, and it is all consuming.

Classes will continue as usual, as Irish dance has and will continue to be my medicine, exercise regime and creative outlet. However, the classes will be based on Irish footwork and traditional based choreographies, focusing on fitness and technique. Displays, social outings and filming of choreographies will be on hold for the rest of the year at least.

For all my previous students, I hope you keep dancing, in whatever way, shape or form that takes. My life has been made immeasurably better for having you in it. I have lots of happy memories and one day I'd like to make more again.

However for now it is back to the unglamorous and dark loamy soil of technique, practice and repetition.

Much love always,
Karen.

the Witches of Scotland tartan, is a specially designed tartan pattern meant to commemorate the women persecuted for witchcraft in Scotland during the period of the Witchcraft Act (1563-1736), with its colors and thread counts representing symbolic elements like the darkness of the era, the ashes of the burned victims, and the legal documents tied with pink tape used during trials; essentially acting as a living memorial to those who suffered under the witch hunts.

Key elements of the tartan:

Black and Grey:
These dominant colors signify the dark times of the witch trials and the ashes of those executed by burning.

Red:
Represents the bloodshed and violence associated with the witch hunts.

Pink:
Symbolizes the pink tape used to bind legal documents during the witch trials.

Thread Count:
The specific thread count in the design often incorporates the years 1563 and 1736, signifying the duration of the Witchcraft Act.

Significance:

Campaign for Recognition:
This tartan is part of a campaign by the Witches of Scotland group, aiming to raise awareness about the historical injustice done to accused witches and to push for official recognition and apology for the witch trials.

Living Memorial:
By wearing this tartan, individuals can actively participate in remembering and honoring the victims of the Scottish witch hunts.

New term coming up starting on the 13th February for 9 weeks.
Classes Thursday evenings from 6:30pm - 7:30pm.

We've also moved to a new location in the CBD at:
111 Magellan St Dance Studio.
Term fees are $135, payable by the second week of classes.

We're going back to basics and focusing on developing our technical skills.

For those who are interested in learning some hard shoe, come along! We're going to start on the beginner treble jig. It's like tap but more fun. :-)

And of course, there will be group fun dances and learning some soft shoe technique as well.

Looking forward to getting back in the (new) studio and get the old blood moving. New students always welcome, just give me a DM for more information. See you there!
