Before I got chronically sick I pushed myself and used up my precious little executive function entering a lot of things, and applying for a lot of opportunities, none of which came off. I felt like a real reject failure but also opting out of external validation made me commit to just focussing on my own lil inner world and art practice. And today for the first time I have entered a new work in a prize and I feel a real sense of achievement and gratitude that I could think clearly enough and have enough energy and hope back to pull it off. And it pushed me to create something very special and unique, a culmination of the ideas and techniques I have been exploring. Regardless of the outcome of the prize, I am thrilled with how my work has evolved over the past year of daily practice. The latest work in my series “The Body Lands”.

What weird thing will I create today on my day off? Where will the line take me? Need to go for a walk first and do my short workout and get those happy chemicals pumping in my head. A must for me otherwise I can get really unhappy and spiral very quickly.

I’m Jex Lopez a Northern Rivers artist and musician and all I have to do is look outside my window for mountains of inspiration… and then turn inwards… and push it to the very edge. I am part of a group show with opening night at Uki Town Hall Sat June 27th and open the next day Sun 28th. We are part of the for this show.

I think what I love about art is that I can constantly surprise myself with what emerges. Such a delight to create anywhere with these techniques. It’s a bronze pen on black paper. And what a gift that I scored a big easel for $3 from op shop this morning! So I can start creating big pieces soon. If u want to commission an original hit me up. Just finished one for someone.
