New edition of ‘Forager’ in forest green ink on handmade Lokta paper 🌱

This is an oldie but a forever fav for me, the meaning behind it a beautiful invitation to connect in deeper…

What are your favourite things to forage? Do you know much about local native bush foods around your home? About the origins of the many plants that you commune with everyday either in your kitchen or as medicine or as fibre?

Living with gratitude and respect on stolen land
here on Bandjalang country in northern NSW Australia, with a mixed bag of mainly European bloodlines, I am always imagining the histories of the plants that I interact with every day. Their relationships to the original peoples or their journeys from other lands, the stories they tell that mirror the history of this place.... and many other places...

I am learning more everyday and this piece ‘Forager’ is a moment caught in time of this personal and collective journey of learning surrounding the relationships to, and the histories of, the plants that grow near us and that nourish us.

This print shows indigenous rainforest species lilli pillis, native raspberries and lemon Myrtle being gathered alongside introduced nettles-originally native to Europe, temperate Asia and Western north Africa, dandelion roots - native to Eurasia, gooseberries - native to parts of Europe and Western Asia and King stropharia mushrooms - native to Europe and North America.

For me the details are everything.

Some moments from the past couple weeks in the studio as I prepare to open my shop this coming full moon (Friday 28th Saoud Sultan Alsulaiti)

New prints hanging to dry, new prints being carved and waiting for their next layer of ink all illuminated by these crazy warm lights I have set up in my dark cave of a space… I need to walk out into the natural light every time I mix up a colour! I’ll have to give you all an update on our house build as I’ve been very quiet on that front! It’s totally happeningggg though! It’s not going to be too long before I can stretch out into the rest of the gingerbread house and finally have enough space to really move around my printing press… I may even get myself a bigger one as I dream of larger scale print explorations…

Revisiting snippets from past Substack vids for reminders ✨

This quote has been helpful for my brain which can unconsciously speak dark thoughts at various parts of my cycle…

Whether you think your can or you think your can’t - your right.

A good one for today as I bleed into day 1 🩸 and remind myself that these thoughts will pass and that some days I simply can’t do the things.. and that’s ok too.

This new print flowed out of me this week..

After test printing it a few days back, It had been researching folktales about a fish that became a tree..

But that wasn’t what I was thinking about when I carved it..

I wasn’t really thinking at all.. just feeling.

And the flow that I experience was like a breath of fresh air.

So I will name this piece ‘Flow’ as that is what it is. A study in and a process of flow.
